Love your Amazon Echo but hate that you can only use it next to a plug socket? If so, the i-box Surge could solve your wiring woes. This handy gadget has a built-in battery and acts as a base for your Amazon Echo, turning it into a portable Bluetooth speaker.

You'll get up to eight hours of listening time from a fully charged battery, and it will charge your phone, too; just plug a charging cable into USB port on the i-box Surge.

The gadget only works with 2nd Generation Echos and you’ll need to be connected to a wi-fi network to use Alexa. So while you'll be able to add a soundtrack to your picnic in the park, you won't be able to ask the voice assistant to check the weather when a rain cloud threatens to spoil your fun.

Our verdict

We found the i-box Surge really simple to use. You'll need to remove the fabric casing from your Echo before you place it into the base but doing this is a doddle; just push the button on the bottom of the Echo.

If you already have a compatible Amazon Echo and are looking to purchase a Bluetooth speaker, the i-box Surge is worth considering. Priced at £44.99 from the i-box website, it's great value for money and there are similar versions available for the Echo Dot (3rd Gen) and Echo Spot costing £39.99 and £59.99 respectively.
