All the best Christmas jumpers to help you sparkle through the festive season

From novelty knits to sparkling showstoppers, these are Team GH's favourites

best christmas jumpers

We’re not ashamed to admit here at Good Housekeeping that we love a Christmas jumper. Brilliantly cosy and wonderfully festive, with a sense of humour to boot, we have quite a few in our festive wardrobe.

The best Christmas jumpers can be worn for any occasion – French-tucked into a sequin skirt for a chic take on Christmas, or teamed with your turkey trousers (you know, the super-cosy ones with the elasticated waistband) for indulging over Twixmas (absolutely zero judgement here).

Whether you prefer a novelty knit with more than a hint of kitsch or something subtly sequinned (if there is such a thing?!) that can be worn all year round (because sparkle isn’t just for Christmas), there’s an option out there for you.

To help you find the ones that will have you winning best dressed on Christmas Jumper Day (in aid of Save the Children) and beyond, the GH team have shared some of their favourites below, but keep reading to find out how we’ll be wearing them.

When is Christmas Jumper Day 2024?

Let’s be honest, when December hits, every day is Christmas jumper day. But, there’s an official date when everyone is encouraged to wear their knits in support of Save the Children. The charity uses it to raise money to help children everywhere have the best possible future, and people are asked to make a donation if they take part.

Christmas Jumper Day 2024 takes place on Thursday 12 December this year, so mark it in your calendar and you can register on the Save the Children website for a fundraising pack now.

In the meantime, you’ll need to find that showstopping knit, so step this way.

To ensure your favourite jumper lasts for festive seasons to come, read our household advice editor’s guide to caring for your Christmas knit.

Joules Fleece Navidad Christmas Jumper

Fleece Navidad Christmas Jumper
Now 52% Off

We’re low-key obsessed with this Christmas jumper. Not only is it inspired by the famous red sheep knit worn by Princess Diana in 1981, but with a festive twist, it also references one of our favourite Christmas songs: Feliz Navidad. Plus, we’ve had a feel of this knit in real life and it’s thick and cosy.

Sadly, it's very low on stock but if you're lucky, you may nab one!

M&S Collection Sequin Fair Isle Relaxed Christmas Jumper

Sequin Fair Isle Relaxed Christmas Jumper

Take a Fair Isle knit and make it extra Christmassy. The shimmering turquoise sequins around the neckline is what really sets this knit apart. We'd wear with a silver pleated skirt for a dressy Christmas lunch.

Marks & Spencer Slogan Crew Neck Jumper

Slogan Crew Neck Jumper

Keep it classy with Marks & Spencer’s cream sweater – just mind you don’t drop your Terry’s Chocolate Orange on it. Pair with camels and other cream layers for an expensive, quiet luxury look… if you dare!

Fenwick Christmas Bottle Green Sweatshirt “Resting Grinch Face”

Christmas Bottle Green Sweatshirt “Resting Grinch Face”

We love a play on words, and this fun yet knowing sweatshirt lets you maintain a dignified distance from all the OTT novelty festive knits out there. Yes, you’re wearing a Christmas jumper, but you’re totally in on the joke. Note: this sweatshirt only comes in a large size. Shout out to the “All the jingle ladies” design in the same range.

Sainsbury's Tu Grey Christmas Sequin Slogan Knitted Jumper

Tu Grey Christmas Sequin Slogan Knitted Jumper

Sometimes you just want a straightforward, jolly Christmas jumper and that's what you get with this sequin design from Tu. We also like the more muted grey colourway against the sequin silver and gold Ho Ho Hos.

Sainsbury's Tu Matching Family Women's Christmas Tree Checkerboard Jumper

Tu Matching Family Women's Christmas Tree Checkerboard Jumper

Or for something a little more colourful, this checkerboard Christmas tree design is suitably festive and currently reduced. There are only a few sizes left though, so be quick if you want to snap it up (you can check stock levels in-store though).

Joules Embroidered Funnel Neck Jumper with Wool

Embroidered Funnel Neck Jumper with Wool

We think this one just about qualifies as a Christmas jumper thanks to its ski-themed motifs (we can identify with the 'Here for the après-ski sentiment). We also love the cosy funnel neck design and half zip.

River Island Cream Mistletoe Martini Christmas Jumper

Cream Mistletoe Martini Christmas Jumper

Your festive drinks party needs this Mistletoe Martini knit. With a pretty, soft pink neckline, this would look gorgeous with your favourite sequin skirt.

M&S Collection Star Crew Neck Relaxed Fit Jumper

Star Crew Neck Relaxed Fit Jumper

This is a more subtle take on the Christmas jumper if you want to keep it classy. We’d pair it with a sparkly gold skirt if you want to amp up the glamour. This one is also available in black and white and would go very well with Marks and Spencer’s gorgeous sparkly silver midi skirt.

Again, we can’t stress this enough: don’t hang around with these festive knits as they sell out very fast!

Bella Freud Fairytale Of New York Jumper

Fairytale Of New York Jumper

Missed out on the M&S x Bella Freud launch? Treat yourself to the real deal with this jumper, which the designer brings out every season. In tribute to possibly the most popular Christmas song of all time (although Mariah Carey may have something to say about that), it’s one you can bring out year after year.

The Stars Are Out Tonight Long Sleeve T-Shirt

If you don’t want to fork out for one of the jumpers, we think this long-sleeved tee will look very chic under that velvet trouser suit you have your eye on (or already have in your wardrobe). Style with trainers and some sparkly jewellery for the coolest take on Christmas Jumper Day.

Green Knitted Christmas Jumper

We think this would look fabulous with our pyjama bottoms on Christmas morning. It has a slightly oversized design with wide cuffs and boxy finish and we like the fresh take on festive tartan.

Brora Wool Fair Isle Yoke Jumper

Wool Fair Isle Yoke Jumper

Brora is a great go-to for Fair Isle knits that will last you all through winter (not just the 12 days of Christmas). You never know, you may even spot it on series 3 of The Traitors come January – Claudia and her stylist are big fans of the high-end, high street brand.

It is pricey, so keep an eye out for any sale periods when you might be able to save a little. Wear this à la Claudia with some skinny black jeans or clash your prints with some wide-leg checked trousers.
