The wines of Villa Maria are pretty much always great value, whatever the price. They make Sauvignon Blanc that’s more expensive than this one, but I don’t think you can beat this one for pure, vivid Sauvignon flavours at an affordable price. And being so widely available, it’s easy to find.

This has long been a favourite of mine, as an example of a modern-style Portuguese white designed to deliver good quality at low price and with maximum versatility in matching with food. It’s delightfully fragrant, and complex fruit flavours are given zing and zip by excellent acidity. Great for fish, light chicken and much more. Note: like the Dão also mentioned, this is part of a major recent upsurge in quality for Portuguese wine.

Riesling is best known as the grape variety of Germany’s finest white wines (and some of those in Alsace, too), but it has been taken up enthusiastically by winemakers in the New World. Few areas have succeeded as brilliantly as the cool-climate Clare and Eden valleys in south Australia. This wine, from Aldi, is relatively inexpensive and delivers Riesling’s typical flavours of lime and lime zest in a perfectly dry package.

Pouilly-Fuissé is in the Mâcon, in the south of Burgundy. The area doesn’t have the worldwide reputation that allows its more northerly sections (the Côte d’Or) to charge astonishing prices for their top wines, both white and red. But they can be excellent, and this crisp, nicely oaked version is one of the good ones – especially at the reduced price. A good wine for turkey as well as fish and tangy cheeses.

Dão, smack-dab in the centre of Portugal, has produced wine for centuries. And for a long time, a lot of that wine was – I’ll try to be charitable – unpleasant to drink unless you had a stinking cold. No longer. Modern winemaking skill has raised the level tremendously, and this example from Tesco, bursting with fresh, lively berry flavour, is a great example at a great price. Perfect with braised beef. Note: Touriga Nacional, the main grape variety, is also the main one in the Douro valley, where port comes from. You’ll notice the resemblance.

Pinot Noir – most famous as the red grape variety of Burgundy and one of those in Champagne – usually hits some very high flights of pricing. In the case of this Asda offering, from one of the best areas for Pinot in Australia, the price stays right close to earth. Quite delicate for a red, this could be your turkey wine. Or drink it with deeply-flavoured fish such as salmon, mackerel or tuna.

Zinfandel is the great all-American grape variety, often producing wines that are as big and powerful as one of those gigantic American football players. It’s pretty rare to find a really good one over here for less than £12, so this is all the more reason to snap up this fine example from Waitrose at the reduced price. Warning: it contains 15% alcohol, so it’s not for knocking back. Try it with rich stews or game dishes.

The red wines of the Languedoc provide most of my ‘house wines’ for their attractiveness, value and general dependence on three favourite grape varieties: Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre. The trio are often blended but can also shine on their own, as they do in this wine: lush, red-berry-ish flavours cut through by soft tannins and nice acidity. A great all-rounder for almost any meat dish.

This is a wine to make people stop using the words ‘supermarket Champagne’ as a derogatory term. It’s a Blanc de Blancs, which means that only Chardonnay is used, and has the crisp citrus-and-apples flavours that go with that style. But it’s also surprisingly rich and toasty, a by-product of its long time in the bottle.

This is a lively, thoroughly enjoyable Prosecco at a pretty painless price. Good enough to drink on its own, but affordable enough to be suitable for mixing in a Bellini or an Aperol Spritz.

This is a remarkably good Champagne at the price, with fine fizz, lively fruit, good toasty flavours and surprising complexity. Don’t be fooled by the price: just taste the wine and you’ll be convinced by the quality. And by the way: Aldi sells a different Champagne of equally high quality, Veuve Monsigny, for the same price.

This is a fabulous wine from one of the greatest names in port. If you're not familiar with the tawny style – lighter in colour than vintage-type port and with a lovely nutty flavour – this is a widely accessible place to start.
