From conscious and cruelty-free to ‘clean’, navigating the green beauty landscape can be tricky, especially when the semantics surrounding vegan skincare are such a grey area. Separating the good, the bad and the greenwashing has become quite the task and a vegan label is no exception.

Regulating organisations like PETA can help us to navigate the muddy waters of plant-based beauty by ensuring that no animals are harmed during any stage of creating a product. Every brand certified by PETA must be 100% cruelty free, with every ingredient and formula produced without any testing on animals. And for skincare to be classed as vegan, the organisation’s earth-loving ethos goes one step further.

What does ‘vegan’ mean when it comes to skincare?

It’s important to clarify the common buzzwords relating to green skincare. “While cruelty-free products and their ingredients aren't tested on animals, vegan products also don’t contain any animal-derived ingredients,” explains Dr. Julia Baines, PETA’s Science Policy Manager.

“It should be noted though, that labels such as ‘organic’, ‘clean’, ‘green’ and ‘eco-friendly’ don’t guarantee that a product is cruelty free, and that vegetarian products may still include substances such as snail slime, beeswax, and honey,” she adds.

Dr. Baines says that PETA always encourages shoppers to opt for vegan products from companies that do not test their products on animals: “That's the only way to be 100% certain that no living beings were harmed in any way for that shampoo, shower gel, lipstick or lotion.”

How do I know if a product is vegan?

Although ‘vegan’ as a term is unregulated, certification is key when it comes to identifying vegan skincare. Look out for The Vegan Society’s logo of accreditation, which marks products created without using any animal extracts or by-products during their manufacturing process.
