The only thing worse than noticing a spot slowly brewing under your skin is waking up to one staring you straight in the face. While pimples are often associated with the teenage years, there are actually several factors that can bring these unwanted visitors around for mature skin as well, especially in the colder months.
Whether it’s from clogged pores, medications, or stress, adult acne can pop up when you least expect it. And in our busy lives, what we need more than ever is a quick fix – and ideally one that you can grab from the drugstore on your way home.
The solution might already be a familiar one, having most likely been adopted by your teenager thanks to TikTok. Pimple patches in all forms – from multicoloured to star-shaped – have not only taken the younger generation by storm, but most recently, our favourite celebrities too.
The likes of Anne Hathaway, Jodie Comer and Millie Bobby Brown have been raving about these speedy spot treatments, and even rocking them while out and about. While we won’t force you to follow suit on that last part, acne patches are just as effective an option for adults desperately looking to minimise spots overnight. We spoke to a skincare expert to find out just how they work, and which patches to go for (don’t panic: invisible options are included!).
What causes pimples on mature skin?
Hayley Walker, a skincare specialist at Justmylook, says that alongside stress and diet, hormones play a big role with pimples.
“As we enter midlife and the skin’s natural ageing process, hormonal fluctuations – particularly a decrease in oestrogen and an increase in androgens – can lead to excess oil production,” explains Hayley. When pores then become clogged, the skin can become susceptible to spots as a result.
Hayley adds: “the skin’s changing needs (like dehydration or sensitivity to certain skincare products), stress and certain medications may also trigger breakouts and clogging.”
How do acne patches work?
According to Hayley, it's essential to cover pimples as they form.
"Acne patches work by creating a protective barrier over pimples, helping to speed up the healing process, particularly for mature skin,” she says. “The hydrocolloid inner layer of the patch absorbs excess fluids like oil and pus, which reduces the size and redness of the pimple, while minimising irritation.”
For mature skin in particular, Hayley explains that acne patches are beneficial as they protect the area from the risks of inflammation and potential scarring. “The patch also acts as a shield against bacteria, dirt and makeup, preventing further infection.”
How should I use acne patches?
For the best results, Hayley recommends letting an acne patch sit either for several hours after application, or overnight. For those reluctant to sport a noticeable pimple patch in public, the latter option is actually more effective as a treatment.
“Leaving acne patches on overnight allows them to work uninterrupted,” says Hayley. “This aids in faster healing, which is especially important for mature skin that may take longer to recover.”
Hayley adds: “Always check the product’s instructions, as application time may vary depending on the brand and type of patch."
