Whether they’re adding a subtle sweep of blue eyeliner or adopting an anti-ageing eyeshadow trick, we can’t get enough of the recent beauty updates coming from Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, and Catherine, Princess of Wales. So you can only imagine the excitement in the GH office when the pair made a joint appearance last night – and raised the bar for royal glamour together.
The occasion? A State banquet at Windsor Castle to commemorate the official visit of French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte. The royals, of course, were dressed to the nines. Kate took us by surprise as she wore a tiara for the first time in two years, while Sophie chose her favourite aquamarine tiara, which cleverly converts into a necklace (Handy! Where can we get one?)
While it’s easy to be dazzled by the sparkle of royal jewels, the GH beauty team couldn’t resist a closer inspection of their makeup looks. Both Kate and Sophie caught us off guard, subverting expectations with far more sultry, smokier looks than we’re used to – ooh la la!
Sophie’s makeup featured her regular go-tos: glowing skin, a sheer base that lets her freckles shine through, a sweep of pink blush and, to match, her favourite soft pink lipstick. However, what caught our attention was the way her eyes popped. Her lids glimmered under the lights – a shimmering taupe shade was dusted across and blended just below the brow bone, which itself had a sweep of highlighter for added glow.
To bring depth to the look, richly-pigmented eyeliner was masterfully applied to make her lashes appear fuller and defined. The finishing touch? A sweep of merlot liner below the waterline, adding a subtle splash of colour to her look – a technique we’ve seen her adopting more and more in recent appearances.
In the same vein as Sophie, Kate embraced the sultry eye look – did the ladies confer beforehand, or was it pure coincidence? Either way, we’re here for the royal evening glam-up.
Kate’s skin was just as radiant, bronzed to perfection and beautifully complemented by a sweep of pretty pink blush. The look took a smokier turn when it came to her eyes, with a dusting of a deep grey eyeshadow swept across the lids and blended upwards. A pop of colour was added with a rich blue shadow concentrated on the outer corner of her eyes. A thin line of black liner was applied to enhance the lash line, drawing attention to her long, fluttering lashes.
Consider us inspired – we’re more than happy to let the royal ladies take the reins of our beauty routines. Now, all that’s left is to rummage through our makeup bags for some smokier shades.
