As one of the most stylish Royals, Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, has never shied away from experimenting with her beauty routine. It was just a couple of months ago when she took us by surprise with a bold burgundy manicure, an unexpected nail colour for spring. Now it seems a pattern is emerging and that Sophie is quite the fan of the shade – this time embracing the burgundy eyeliner trend…
The Duchess looked radiant as she made a solo visit to Northampton yesterday to unveil a commemorative plaque. She was dressed elegantly in a structured white Prada jacket, paired with a floral maxi skirt and patent nude heels. Meanwhile, her hair was swept back into her classic twisted up-do. However, naturally, the GH beauty team couldn’t help but take a closer look at her makeup, spotting a splash of merlot eyeliner.
While the rest of her makeup featured her usual go-tos – black mascara, soft pink lipstick and a sheer base to let her freckles show through – the Duchess has gone for a subtle shake-up in the eye department. Her lids were enhanced with a dusky rose shade, and her lower lash line had been subtly defined with a dash of burgundy-toned liner, blended to a soft finish.
In case you haven’t noticed, burgundy has been emerging as the trendiest colour in beauty over the last couple of months, particularly in eyeliners and mascaras. The warm tone offers a great alternative to your typical black and brown shades. It’s the ideal way to introduce a hint of colour into your routine without being overly dramatic.
Sophie isn’t the only celebrity to be jumping on the burgundy train. The shade has been spotted on the red carpet, with Hannah Waddingham sporting the merlot liner look last month. Meanwhile, Victoria Beckham is such a fan of the colour that she recently launched a new Bordeaux shade of her much-loved (and GHI-approved) kajal liner.
The appeal is easy to understand; burgundy is one of those shades that’s universally flattering. For those with blue eyes, like Sophie, the shade is particularly striking. Since it sits across the colour wheel, burgundy makes blue and green eyes pop.
As highlighted by Victoria Beckham’s makeup artist, those with brown and hazel eyes can join in on the fun, too. Wearing burgundy can create a subtle shift in deeper eyes: ‘It really makes your eye colour pop. They look really hazel-y green. It brightens them up so much,’ she told Victoria in a behind-the-scenes video shared to Instagram.
So, if you’re in the mood to liven up your beauty routine in time for summer, a touch of burgundy may be just what you need. Whether it be a swipe of eyeliner, perhaps a dusting of merlot eyeshadow, or you want to take it a step further with a lashing of burgundy mascara, your eyes are guaranteed to pop.
