When news reached our ears that Jones Road was launching a tinted moisturiser, our first thought was, ‘what took so long?’. After all, MUA Bobbi Brown’s beauty brand is the epitome of pretty but polished ‘less is more’ makeup, and what ticks that box better than a skin tint?
After many requests (and a bit of controversy along the way!) Jones Road’s Just Enough tinted moisturiser has finally landed, and we’re here to tell you exactly what it’s like.
But first, a bit of context. Jones Road’s first foray into base, What The Foundation, managed to whip up a TikTok storm in 2022 after influencer Meredith Duxbury slathered on far too much, and (unfairly) slated it. Bobbi herself got (very sweetly) involved, the application technique gently explained – less is more, remember! – and everyone calmed down. Jones Road had not done the unthinkable and made a dud. What The Foundation is simply an unusual, balmy base, and you only need a dab for a lovely, sheer finish. And.. breathe.
But still, lessons learned. Perhaps some beauty fans remain heavy-handed or texturally turned off, so Jones Road has cooled its heels and taken its sweet time before finally launching a more traditional tinted moisturiser.
Available in 16 stretchy, hydration-packed shades, Bobbi promises Just Enough is the last word in ‘you but better’ beauty: ‘It evens out your skin, it covers discoloration and redness, and as a result you look like you’re not wearing anything at all,’ she says. ‘It’s the quickest way to feel put together without looking like you’ve done anything.’
Review: Just Enough tinted moisturiser
Beauty director Lynne says: ‘Show me a base that promises to make a face look invisibly better, and I’ll show you a bare cheek, eagerly proffered in the hope of enhancement. If it looks like health from within rather than makeup sitting on top, it’s for me.
In that respect, Just Enough sailed through the crucial back-of-the-left-hand preview test, leaving my swatched side impressively glowier, smoother and generally evened-out in tone. A good start, and I couldn’t wait to replicate it on my face.
Here, it proved fuss-free and equally gratifying. I applied it sparingly but slapdash, in front of my unforgiving magnifying mirror, and was happy to find no evidence of it snarling up like rush-hour traffic into pores and eyebrows or around edges of the nose. It rubbed in effortlessly with a brush and felt silky on my dryness-prone skin. With zero threat of a tidemark, this really is the kind of product you can sling on and get on with your day.
While my before and afters are 100% unedited, I’d say this gives the impression of a very light digital skin retouch. A quick whisk of this over the skin is as effective as any of my ‘better spruce up a bit’ dabblings on Facetune, takes half the time and doesn’t risk any tell-tale signs of intervention.
It played nicely, too, with the rest of my makeup, with (minimal) extra products gliding easily on top. With just quick slicks of blusher, under-eye concealer and mascara, I had the office face in place and was ready to get on with my day. My daughter wanted to pinch it, too – always a good/bad sign.
I can only speak for my 50-plus skin, I’m 100% with Bobbi when she calls this ‘confidence in a tube’. I might go further and say ‘post-facial glow in a tube’. It’s a product that’s easy to enjoy, use and understand. I’d wager there will be no need for emergency TikTok interventions with Just Enough – and I really hope that name is an ever-so-slightly cheeky wink to the past furore.’
