Hair-wise, it’s been a time of mixed fortunes for the Clooney family of late. While Amal has looked flawless on the Cannes red carpet, poor George has been ridiculed for the ‘awful’ dark hair dye he’s been required to adopt for his role on Broadway. Happily the dark days are nearly now over, with both halves of the power couple at their polished best for their Tony Awards debut in New York last night.

Amal shone at the glittering event, which honours the best of Broadway, with her signature glossy blow-dry, which was bigger and bouncier than ever. Her hair stylist dubbed the look ‘Rita Hayworth glam’, and Amal channelled vintage Hollywood in an off-the-shoulder gown, dripping in pearls.

Her makeup for the night came courtesy of her long-term friend Charlotte Tilbury, who combined two of her signature products to light up Amal’s skin. The complexion perfection was created with Charlotte's Magic Cream plus Unreal Skin Sheer Glow Tint Hydrating Foundation Stick, which Charlotte calls ‘my secret to skin that looks instantly blurred and smooth with a ring light effect!’

The dark dye is on its way out - hurrah!

Husband George looked dapper by her side, with his self-professed ‘awful’ dark hair dye looking well on the way to growing out. The near-black dye, for his starring role in Good Night, And Good Luck, was met with universal derision and, as George recently confessed in an interview with CBS Mornings, ‘I know it’s not good, you never get used to it.’

He added: ‘I started going grey when I was 25, so I’ve been grey most of my life. Nothing makes you look older than being 63 and dyeing your hair.’ Amal hasn’t been a fan of the look, either. George admitted: ‘My wife thinks it’s funny,’ and added that his children ‘laugh at it’.

Fortunately, having a short hairstyle has made the transition reasonably quick and easy, and the actor was able to hide his growing-out pains under a baseball cap on the Seth Myers’ chat show last week.

George’s appearance at the Tony awards showed that the dye is almost gone, with only a few remnants lingering on the longer top section, while his short back and sides were back to their usual silver shade.

We’re sure he’s glad to be grey (again), and we’re certainly happy to see our favourite silver fox back out in the wilds of Manhattan.
