Do blondes really have more fun? From constant root touchups to keeping brassy tones at bay, maintaining blonde hair can often feel like a full-time job. But Heidi Klum, who throughout her career has been known for her signature golden locks, may have uncovered the secret to making it all a little easier. Enter: lowlights.

Now, lowlights aren’t new territory for Heidi; in fact, she’s been leaning into this darker look for a couple of months. But last night at the American Music Awards, she stole the spotlight with what looked like a recent (and slightly darker) hair refresh. So, by the looks of it, she’s fully embracing the lower-maintenance blonde life.

While we all know and love highlights, it seems it’s about time we finally give lowlights the recognition they deserve. Adding lowlights involves strategically blending in darker strands, usually two to three shades darker than your base colour. While highlights lift and brighten the hair, lowlights work in the opposite direction, adding contrast and dimension.

Heidi’s lowlights blend seamlessly with her natural roots, creating a softer and more harmonious look, all while making regrowth much more forgiving (you can wave goodbye to harsh roots!). It’s a clever technique that not only results in less trips to the salon, but also helps to create depth and emphasise texture.

As she made her way to the red carpet, Heidi shared a playful behind-the-scenes snap with her son, Henry. Fans were quick to share their love for the duo – one commented, ‘Beautiful mama and handsome son 😍’, while another wrote, ‘Looking great as always Heidi’ – and we couldn’t agree more. In fact, we’re already bookmarking her red carpet pics for our next trip to the salon!
