This is not a drill: Greggs has officially launched a vegan sausage roll, and the snack game for non meat-eaters just got a whole lot wilder.

With Veganuary in full swing, the bakery has announced a vegan-friendly version of its most iconic product - the sausage roll - which is made with butter-free pastry and a "bespoke" Quorn filling.

With over 1.5million Greggs sausage rolls selling in the UK per week, and over 3.5million vegans in the UK, it's going to be sausage rolls all round from Thursday 3rd January, when they launch.

The vegan sausage roll will feature 96 layers of "light and crisp" puff pastry, and a meat-free sausage filling. Roger Whiteside, chief executive at Greggs, said:

"Like many food retailers we have seen increasing demand for vegetarian and vegan products. We have been trying to develop a Vegan version of our famous sausage roll for some time now. It has not been easy but our taste panel customers all love this one, so we have decided to launch it as our contribution to Veganuary."

The launch follows strong consumer demand after whisperings of a vegan sausage roll at Greggs did the rounds, including a petition by PETA last year, which was signed by more than 20,000 people.
