A great suitcase is a travel must-have, but even ones from the best luggage brands aren't immune to one of the most dreaded travel mishaps: a lost bag or missing contents. Luggage straps can add an extra level of security, keeping your checked luggage or carry-on bag securely closed, away from prying hands and even making them easier to spot at baggage claim. Some also allow you to tether multiple bags together, so you can more easily navigate public transportation and airport terminals.

While we haven't formally tested luggage straps, pros in the Good Housekeeping Institute’s Textiles Lab recently tested over 80 luggage brands. We know what materials and features make suitcases — and their accessories — reliable and durable. Our top pick is made by Samsonite, a well-respected brand that has continuously proven to manufacture highly durable and easy-to-use travel gear — and snagged the best overall distinction in our luggage tests. These picks have been selected by independent editor research and based on noteworthy reviews.

Pros

  • Made by a reputable luggage brand
  • Heavy-duty construction
  • Adjusts up to 72 inches

Cons

  • Adjusting the length is trickier than it should be

In our recent tests of luggage brands, Samsonite earned top honors not only for its wide assortment of styles, but also for its ease of use and durability. Though we haven't tested the brand's luggage straps, we are consistently impressed by its travel products and can vouch for the overall quality. Reviews of this luggage strap confirm users have similar experiences with the brand overall, as well as this product in particular.

The luggage strap, which comes in four colors including an easy-to-spot orange and purple, is made of a heavy-duty polypropylene that can fit bags up to 72 inches around. (Note: Some users say it's difficult to adjust the length.) The Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) buckle — a highly durable material that can withstand high temperatures and rough handling — looks equally wear-resistant, but still appears to open and close without unnecessary struggle.

Pros

  • Vibrant and easy to spot
  • Comes in a pack of four

Cons

  • Strap material not listed

If you're looking for a quick way to identify your bag, this bright green set of straps from Untethered will do the trick. But it's not all about the visibility aspect. Although these luggage straps offer great overall value, they look just as rugged as others.

Each strap is claimed to be made out of a durable synthetic material that can contain up to 400 pounds, although the exact material isn't listed, and some reviewers say it's on the thinner side. The straps also have stainless steel buckles. Because four come per set, you can also cross these straps on your luggage, providing even more security for the contents inside.

Each nylon strap has vegan leather accents to match, as well as a matte black buckle to keep everything secure. You can even add a monogram for added flair. The woven strap is made of a durable polypropylene that adjusts from 35 to 64 inches (a bit smaller than other top picks) and has a plastic buckle to keep everything secure. Pros

  • Stainless steel buckle
  • Adjusts up to 72 inches

Cons

  • Only comes in two colors

Swiss Gear is another well-known brand that's been manufacturing luggage and travel gear for more than two decades. Like other high-quality luggage straps, this one is made from a heavy-duty polypropylene and boasts a stainless steel fastener that reviewers say stays firmly clasped. The strap only comes in two shades, but the red is very vibrant — a great option for anyone who prioritizes visibility. It also adjusts up to an impressive 72 inches.

Best Locking

Samsonite Luggage Strap With Combination Lock

Pros

  • Triple-dial TSA-approved lock
  • Adjusts up to 72 inches

Cons

  • Adjusting the length is trickier than it should be

The sister product to our top overall pick, this luggage strap from Samsonite has all of the same great features. It's constructed out of polypropylene and ABS that's supposed to be resistant to wear and tear, adjusts up to 72 inches and comes in four colors including more a neutral black and an easier-to-spot orange.

One downside: it can be just as tricky to adjust the length as its sister pick. But here's where this product differs: It has a TSA-approved combination lock to establish extra theft-protection. The triple-dial mechanism sets and resets, allowing you to choose from hundreds of possible combinations.

Vigorport Luggage Straps

Pros

  • Allows you to secure up to three bags together
  • Can hold up to 400 pounds

Cons

  • Only comes in black

It can be difficult to manage multiple bags at once — especially if you're alone in a busy transportation hub. This uniquely designed luggage strap can help make the task more approachable. The double-looped T-shaped design allows you to seamlessly connect two suitcases to one another.

It even comes with an additional strap to secure a smaller third bag, like a personal item. The nylon strap can hold a whopping 400 pounds and boasts an alloy steel buckle that's just as well-equipped to handle those bigger loads. Unfortunately, this strap only comes in black, but it's really meant to be more of an aid rather than a visual cue.

Pros

  • Adjusts up to 76.5 inches
  • Comes in 18 colors and patterns
  • Pack of two

Cons

  • Plastic buckle isn't as durable as others

Not only is this rainbow luggage strap playful and fun, but it's also very easy to spot in a crowd. Alternatively, choose from a range of 18 other colors and patterns. Of course, it's as functional as you'd hope.

The package of two can be used to secure your suitcase vertically, horizontally or with a crossed design for added security. It's also made of a high-density jacquard polyester and adjusts up to 76.5 inches. On the downside, some reviewers say the plastic buckle isn't as heavy-duty as they'd hope.

Best Elastic

ZINZ Elastic Luggage Strap

Pros

  • No buckles to adjust
  • Can be used to secure a carry-on

Cons

  • Not as durable as other materials

Though nylon, polyester and polypropylene tend to be more durable, they don't have much give — you're much more limited by the products dimensions. This elastic luggage strap is different, because the straps, which come in an X pattern, stretch around your suitcase for the perfect fit — no adjusting with finicky buckles.

Of course, there are limitations to the stretch, and you won't be able to get this one around a large suitcase vertically. You can, however, use it to secure luggage horizontally or even to attach a carry-on item to rolling baggage.

MaterialNylon (straps); Zinc (fastener)

Best High-Visiblity

Luxebell Luggage Straps

Pros

  • Longest option available
  • Includes a spot for personal details
  • Comes in a pack of four vibrant colors

Cons

  • Plastic buckle isn't as durable as others

Another vibrant set of luggage straps that's easy to spot, but this time in an array of four neon colors. The color isn't the only claim to fame, though. These luggage straps adjust to more than 78 inches — the longest of any other belt on this list.

Theses straps are made of rugged polypropylene and have sturdy, quick-release plastic buckles that aren't quite as solid as others made of stainless steel, but still get the job done. There's another nice design feature worth mentioning: Each strap has a window where you can insert a card with personal details — a name, phone number or e-mail address — should your baggage get lost.

What to look for when shopping for the best luggage straps

double line break

Luggage straps are fairly uncomplicated products and most will get the job done just fine, but a few special considerations can help you cherry pick the best of the best:

✔️ Material: The best luggage straps are made of performance synthetics — nylon, polyester and polypropylene, for example — because they’re strong, keep their shape well and are water-resistant. Overall, according to our Textiles Lab pros, nylon is considered the most durable, though polyester and polypropylene (a type of plastic) are wholly sufficient, particularly for occasional use during regular travel.

✔️ Size: The vast majority of luggage straps are adjustable, but it pays to consider any minimum and maximum dimensions prior to purchasing to ensure it will fit your suitcase.

✔️ Lock: A lock provides an added measure of security, but must be TSA-approved.

✔️ Color: If you have a standard suitcase — i.e. one that looks like all of the other black suitcases out there — you may want to select a colorful or personalized luggage strap that will help you identify your bag at baggage claim.

Are luggage straps TSA-approved?

double line break

All checked and carry-on baggage is subject to security screenings, and baggage must be able to be opened for inspection, should it be deemed necessary. Luggage straps are TSA-approved, but they must be easily removable either by a buckle closure or a TSA-approved lock.

Are luggage straps worth it?

Luggage straps are designed to keep your suitcase securely closed, plus can help you spot your bag in a sea of others. Though they're not a must-have, they can provide peace of mind, especially for anxious travelers. They're easy to use, too. Just wrap the luggage strap around a zipped suitcase, adjust for a snug fit, and fasten the buckle.
