Tempur-Pedic has been developing memory foam products that provide pressure relief for decades — from seats in NASA aircraft to its best-selling mattresses. The brand is famous for its iconic advertisements featuring a person jumping on a Tempur-Pedic mattress while a wine glass sits on top, staying completely upright, thanks to the mattress’s ability to prevent motion transfer.

Tempur-Pedic's beds are expensive — but are they really worth the investment? The brand claims its popular memory foam mattresses are made of innovative and high-quality materials that can help you achieve a great night’s sleep, so we put them to the test. In the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab, we assess mattresses of all kinds — from mattresses for back pain to hybrid mattresses.

Over the years, we've evaluated models from all three of Tempur-Pedic's collections, and the brand's beds have earned top spots in our round-ups of the best overall beds, best cooling mattresses, best mattresses in a box, best beds for side sleepers and more. The mattresses are tester favorites, receiving high ratings for overall comfort and support.

Tempur-Pedic's three mattress collections — Adapt, Cloud and Breeze — are available at different levels of firmness and different price points. To break down all of the mattresses Tempur-Pedic has to offer, we analyzed our previous mattress test results for data on Tempur-Pedic beds. Plus, we worked with our exclusive survey panel who provided real-user feedback and contributed over 6,000 responses about Tempur-Pedic mattresses for us to review, including their thoughts on everything from ease of setup to performance over time. We also tried the latest Tempur-Pedic mattresses ourselves and talked with brand representatives about Tempur-Pedic's mattress features.

Here's all you need to know about Tempur-Pedic's current mattress collections, Adapt, Cloud and Breeze.

Tempur-Adapt Collection

Tempur-Pedic

• Best for: Back or neck pain sufferers looking for pressure relief
• Delivery: White-glove delivery with free setup and old mattress removal
Trial period: 90 days

The Tempur-Adapt collection of mattresses includes some of the brand's best-selling options. The mattresses are designed to adapt specifically to your body's shape, weight and temperature for extra comfort and support while you sleep.

Tester notes: Many of our consumer survey panelists are fans of the Tempur-Adapt collection, with several noting how well their Adapt mattresses conform to their bodies while they sleep and how well their mattresses maintain their shape, even after years of use.

Some respondents noted that getting used to sleeping on a firmer memory foam mattress could take a while. But, they said that with time, they enjoyed the firm feel of their Tempur-Adapt collection mattresses and claimed that it helped to ease their back and neck pain. One Good Housekeeping Institute expert shared that Tempur-Pedic's ProAdapt medium hybrid mattress has grown on her and that her "quality of sleep has improved" since she first began using it. Another expert who sleeps on the regular Adapt model shared, "It responds to my body very quickly without me falling too deep into pockets" and highlighted the overall quality of the mattress.

Altogether, the foam Adapt models are more well-received than the hybrid models, which is no surprise because memory foam is what Tempur-Pedic does best.

Available models: There are three options to choose from — the Adapt mattress, the ProAdapt mattress and the LuxeAdapt mattress. The main differences between these models are the amount of memory foam used in each and the different types of specialized foams used.

Adapt Mattress

Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt Mattress

Height11 inches
SizesTwin, Twin Long, Full, Queen, King, Split King, California King or Split California King
Firmness levelMedium
Mattress typeAll foam or hybrid
Price range$1,699 for a Twin to $3,398 for a Split California King

This model is the most affordable in the Tempur-Adapt collection and uses less advanced foam than the other models. There’s one firmness level (medium), designed with a base and two specialized layers of foam — a softer foam on top for comfort and a supportive foam on the bottom. The hybrid version uses these three layers plus coils to add edge support and responsiveness for easier movement.

ProAdapt Mattress

Tempur-Pedic ProAdapt Mattress

Firmness levelsSoft, medium and firm
Mattress typeAll foam or hybrid
Price range$2,899 for a Twin to $5,798 for a Split California King

This model is also designed with three layers of foam including the base, but the foam is thicker. The top layer is upgraded from the basic Adapt version to provide 20% more pressure relief than the standard foam while the second layer provides cushioning and comfort. It comes in three firmness levels, and there's a medium-feel hybrid version with spring coils for bounce.

LuxeAdapt Mattress

Tempur-Pedic LuxeAdapt Mattress

LuxeAdapt Mattress
Height13 inches
SizesTwin Long, Queen, King, Split King, California King or Split California King
Firmness levelsSoft and firm
Mattress typeAll foam or hybrid
Price range$3,799 for a Twin Long to $7,598 for a Split California King

The priciest model in the Tempur-Adapt collection, this one uses more foam than the previous two. It features the same three layers as the ProAdapt, but the height of each specialized layer is increased, and there’s a new zoned layer of foam for targeted support. The soft option is made with 40% more pressure-relieving foam than in the soft ProAdapt mattress with the same layer of comfort foam underneath. The firm option uses thicker layers of pressure-relieving foam and comfort foam.

Both now feature a new layer of foam between the top two layers and the base foam, which uses contoured cut-outs to create ergonomic zones that the brand claims will conform 30% more. Certain areas, like those around the hips and shoulders, will conform more than others to promote alignment, while others will offer additional support.

Tempur-Cloud Collection

Tempur-Pedic

Best for: Someone who wants the benefits of a Tempur-Pedic mattress for less
Delivery: Shipped boxed for DIY setup through UPS
Trial period: 90 days

Tempur-Pedic has jumped on the popular and convenient mattress-in-a-box trend with the brand’s more affordable Tempur-Cloud collection mattress that is shipped straight to your door. Although the Tempur-Cloud mattress is offered at a lower price than other options, it is still high quality and made with the brand’s iconic motion-isolating, pressure-relieving Tempur material.

Tester notes: Our panel of reviewers agreed that Tempur-Cloud's memory foam material is supportive and provides great motion isolation. Many shared that they can't feel the movement of their pets or spouses shifting around on the bed at night. Respondents also remarked on how comfortable the mattress is, with one tester who shared, "I feel like my entire body is supported in a very gentle way." Meanwhile a survey respondent said, "It's like sleeping on a cloud," lending credibility to the name.

Although the memory foam mattress can be compacted enough to fit into a box, it's still dense and heavy, so it is a little difficult to lift when putting on sheets and can be hard to move when rearranging furniture. But overall, our tester panel found the mattress to be worth the price and the heavy lifting.

Available models: There is only one model available — the Tempur-Cloud mattress.

The Tempur-Cloud mattress is the most affordable of all of Tempur-Pedic's beds and it's made of similar quality foams compared to the brand's other models. It just uses a little less of the specialized foams and has a slightly shorter profile at 10 inches. The medium all-foam option is made with a base layer of foam and two specialized layers — one to support your body and one for cushion and comfort — while the hybrid option includes an additional layer of over 1,000 spring coils for edge support and bounce.

Best cooling Tempur-Pedic mattresses

Tempur-Breeze Collection

a tempurpedic mattress in a bedroom
Tempur-Pedic

Best for: Hot sleepers who want a mattress that can help them stay cool through the night
Delivery: White-glove delivery with free setup and old mattress removal
Trial period: 90 days

Memory foam mattresses are notorious for sleeping hot because dense memory foam absorbs and traps body heat. Tempur-Pedic has developed a Tempur-Breeze collection of mattresses to combat this issue. These mattresses are made with foams integrated with the brand's phase-change technology, which has been proven to keep you from overheating and should help you stay anywhere from 5 to 10 degrees cooler while you sleep.

Tester notes: This mattress collection is a favorite of Good Housekeeping Institute staff, who say that the Tempur-Breeze models promote deep sleep and hold up to years of use. They're also impressed by the cooling capabilities of the mattresses but note that you may not want to use a mattress protector because it can get in the way of the cooling effect.

One tester who sleeps on a soft LuxeBreeze model shared, "It’s very comfortable and oddly supportive even though it’s described as 'soft,'" and added that she sleeps peacefully through the night without being woken up by her partner shifting around in bed. Another tester who was regularly woken up by her moving partner in the night when sleeping on her old mattress said, "I have been sleeping about seven hours straight. It is amazing!" Our consumer panelists agreed that the bed is cooling and that it helps them to sleep comfortably throughout the night without overheating.

Available models: The Tempur-Breeze collection includes two mattresses, the ProBreeze mattress and the LuxeBreeze mattress, as well as the brand's latest mattress and bed base set — the AdaptBreeze Smart Bed. The main differences between the Pro and LuxeBreeze models are the amount of foams used in each and the different types of specialized foam used, while the AdaptBreeze features an entirely new and innovative design, requiring the use of a smart base.

SizesTwin, Twin Long, Full, Queen, King, Split King, California King and Split California King
Firmness levelMedium
Mattress typeAll foam or hybrid
Price range$4,099 for a Twin Long to $8,198 for a Split California King

This mattress is designed with foams that are meant to keep you 5 degrees cooler than other models of Tempur-Pedic mattresses. First is a base layer of foam for support that's topped with ventilated foam to provide airflow. Next is a layer of foam intended to pull heat away from your body and another layer that absorbs heat. Plus, there's a cool-to-the-touch cover to keep you comfortable as soon as you lie down. The hybrid option is similar, but there are over 1,000 spring coils under the cooling foams to provide extra support and allow for easier movement.

Firmness levelsSoft, medium and firm
Mattress typeAll foam or hybrid
Price range$5,099 for a Twin Long to $10,198 for a Split California King

According to the brand, the LuxeBreeze is its best-selling mattress and is made with foams that are designed to help you stay up to a whopping 10 degrees cooler while you sleep. The LuxeBreeze starts with a base layer of foam and then a layer of ventilated foam. Next is a layer of foam specific to this model that pulls even more heat away from your body than the ProBreeze mattress and then yet another layer of foam to absorb heat. The mattress cover is cool to the touch for additional cooling comfort. The hybrid model has a medium firmness level and incorporates a layer of double-stacked metal innersprings at the bottom for a more responsive feel.

Combined with the brand's ProSmart adjustable base, the ActiveBreeze Smart Bed is Tempur-Pedic's latest mattress innovation and the brand's most expensive mattress model to date. It starts with a bottom dual-chambered layer for air distribution that helps cool or warm the mattress on each side. Fans built into Tempur-Pedic's ProSmart Air Base blow warm or cool air up and into the mattress, and according to the brand, allow you to feel up to 30 degrees warmer or cooler as you sleep — dependent on your personal settings. Next is a layer of ventilated, pressure-relieving foam to contour to your body. On top of that is a layer of comfort foam for support, and it's encased in a removable, machine-washable cover that is meant to draw heat away from your body and has a cool-to-the-touch feel.

The verdict: Are Tempur-Pedic mattresses worth it?

Yes — the comfort level and lifespan of Tempur-Pedic beds make them well worth the price, according to the majority of our survey panelists and testers. If you want a long-lasting bed that cradles your body and provides superior pressure relief while you sleep, a Tempur-Pedic mattress could be the right pick for you. They are also great choices for couples since they prevent motion transfer, which means you won't feel your partner moving around in bed while you sleep.

A Tempur-Pedic memory foam bed may not be for everyone, though. Memory foam mattresses don't offer the same edge support and stability as traditional innerspring mattresses. And if you're mattress shopping on a budget, it's best to pass on Tempur-Pedic and check out our list of the best affordable mattresses instead, which includes some high-quality memory foam picks for less. Ultimately, it comes down to your specific sleeping needs, but remember, you can take advantage of Tempur-Pedic's 90-day trial before committing to the mattress, though you'll have to pay a $175 shipping fee if you choose to return it.

How we test

In the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab, we are constantly analyzing mattresses from many different brands, including Tempur-Pedic. We put them to the test both inside and outside of the Lab. We first review material information, dimension specifications and other features related to each mattress. We also look into the brand's product claims like "cooling" or "eco-friendly" and ensure they can be validated. For this article, we spoke with representatives from Tempur-Pedic who were able to provide us with additional information about the brand and the mattresses featured.

Our product experts and our consumer testers then try the mattresses, sharing their experiences with delivery and setup and their time sleeping on the mattresses. We collect feedback from expert and consumer testers, and we also survey our panel of Good Housekeeping readers, who share their thoughts on the mattresses they own. Using data collected from our product experts, consumer testers and panelists, we're able to evaluate mattresses for a variety of characteristics:

  • Ordering and delivery: Users tell us about the delivery process and whether the mattress was easy to order, if it arrived on time and if they had any customer service issues.
  • Setup: Our survey respondents and testers share their thoughts about the setup process and whether the mattress took shape quickly.
  • Firmness level: Testers give the mattress a firmness rating to help us understand if the brand's claims about firmness level and feel are accurate.
  • Edge support: Reviewers sit on the edge of their beds and share if the beds sink or maintain their shape with the added weight and pressure.
  • Comfort and support: Our testers rate the mattresses for comfort and support according to their initial experiences and then over an extended period.
  • Temperature regulation: We ask reviewers to rate if they stayed at a comfortable body temperature while sleeping on the mattress, whether or not the model advertises cooling features.
  • Sleep quality: Our respondents tell us about their experiences sleeping on the mattress, if it impacted their quality of sleep (positively or negatively) and their overall satisfaction with the mattresses.
  • Additional feedback: Reviewers are also able to share their specific likes and dislikes about the mattress and share any other comments.

Tempur-Pedic materials, explained

Tempur-Pedic's mattresses are all made with the brand's well-known and innovative memory foam materials. Not all memory foam is the same, though, and it can be difficult to understand how each type of foam impacts your mattress and your sleep.

Tempur-Pedic

Here are some of Tempur-Pedic's most popular materials explained:

  • Original Tempur Comfort foam: This is the brand's original memory foam material, developed to cradle your body and provide comfort.
  • Tempur-ES Comfort foam: A step-up from the original comfort foam. The "ES" stands for "extra soft."
  • Tempur-CM+ Comfort foam: This foam is like the traditional comfort foam with cooling power, thanks to its innovative cell structure and the infused phase-change technology that lends breathability and a cooling effect.
  • Original Tempur Support foam: The brand's original support foam, developed to support your body and relieve pressure while you sleep.
  • Tempur-APR Support foam: "APR" stands for "advanced pressure relief," and this foam provides 20% more pressure relief than the Original Tempur Support foam.
  • Tempur-APR+ Support foam: APR+ is a level up from APR and is designed with a tighter cell structure for 40% more pressure relief than the Original Tempur Support foam.
  • Ventilated Tempur-APR Support foam: Similar to the regular Tempur-APR Support foam, this material is supportive but also breathable, due to the ventilated structure with small holes that provide airflow.
  • Pure Cool foam: This is the brand's "cooling" foam, designed to pull heat away from your body to help you maintain a comfortable temperature — up to 5 degrees cooler.
  • Pure Cool Plus foam: It pulls even more heat away from your body than the Pure Cool foam to help you stay up to 10 degrees cooler.

Which Tempur-Pedic mattress is best for my sleep position?

Tempur-Pedic told Good Housekeeping that there's more to choosing the right mattress than your sleep position alone. Other factors like body size, distribution of mass and prior injuries should all be considered when picking your perfect mattress. The brand carries a range of mattresses at different levels of firmness that are designed with different types of memory foam to help meet the needs of all types of sleepers.

However, Tempur-Pedic did offer basic mattress suggestions for different sleep positions:

  • Side and stomach sleepers may prefer soft to medium mattresses that can contour their bodies and relieve pressure.
  • Back sleepers might be interested in a medium or firm mattress to help align and support the spine, hips and shoulders.

At the GH Institute, we typically suggest a firm mattress for stomach sleepers and a medium to firm mattress for back sleepers to help with spinal alignment. Softer mattresses are helpful for side sleepers because they can alleviate stress around the shoulders, hips and knees.

How long does a Tempur-Pedic mattress last?

A Tempur-Pedic mattress will likely last around 8 to 10 years. Many of our survey panelists report that they've been sleeping on their Tempur-Pedic mattresses for several years and have found the quality and shape of the mattresses to stand the test of time. A few respondents did start to notice dents where they lay in their beds as the mattresses aged. But overall, panelists claimed their beds performed well and maintained their shape, even after a decade of nightly use.

Brand representatives told us that Tempur-Pedic offers a 10-year full replacement limited warranty, meaning the brand will replace or repair your mattress for free for up to 10 years if it meets the conditions of the warranty.

FAQs

Do Tempur-Pedic mattresses sag?

The materials that make up your mattress wear down with time and regular use, so it's natural for some sagging or indentations to develop. While the majority of our testers and panelists didn't experience sagging, some survey panelists noted that their mattresses lost their shape over time.

To ensure the livelihood of your mattress, Tempur-Pedic suggests using a bed frame with a center support and at least five to six legs for Queen beds. Avoid using a boxspring as a bed base. Instead, the brand recommends a flat foundation like its Tempur-Flat Foundation for more support, but if you do choose to use a slatted base, the "slats and bed must be structurally sound and, as a general rule, slats must be at least 3 inches wide and no more than 4 inches apart," says the brand.

Do Tempur-Pedic mattresses sleep hot?

Memory foam mattresses typically sleep hotter than innerspring or hybrid models because dense foam can trap your body heat, leaving you feeling hot and sweaty. Overall, our testers and survey panelists give Tempur-Pedic's mattresses high scores for helping them maintain a comfortable body temperature throughout the night, but some testers said the mattress felt too warm. If you're a particularly sweaty sleeper, we recommend choosing one of the brand's Tempur-Breeze mattresses, which are specially designed to transfer body heat away from your body and keep you cooler while you sleep.

Do Tempur-Pedic mattresses help with back pain?

According to our testers and survey panelists who suffer from chronic pain, Tempur-Pedic's mattresses can provide some relief. One panelist shared, "None of my body parts ache in the morning," while others highlighted that the materials relieve pressure around their joints, reducing their typical aches and pains. No one mattress can fix every sleeper's discomfort, but Jaspal R. Singh, M.D., co-director of the Center for Comprehensive Spine Care at Weill Cornell Medicine and New York-Presbyterian, shares that patients who sleep on memory foam or hybrid mattresses tend to report more restful sleep, in part because of memory foam's pressure-relieving abilities.
