A lot goes into planning a wedding, but the memories that will last a lifetime stem from the day on which you say "I do." Whether you hire a professional photographer or rely on friends and family to take snapshots throughout the special day, having a wedding album to store each moment is a meaningful heirloom to look back on months later or on your first anniversary.

We researched and tested the best wedding albums of 2023, from popular photo book makers to affordable albums you can purchase from online retailers. We also spoke with wedding photographers to learn which online services they recommend for couples, as well as gather input on designing the album — after all, your wedding album is your first family heirloom so you want it to be just right.

From photo book makers to physical albums, there are a lot of avenues to pursue when selecting the perfect wedding album. "It needs to stand the test of time," says Abby Jiu, the popular wedding photographer behind Abby Jiu Photography. "Take the time and extra effort to customize it. It's the one thing you'll take from home to home over the years and something you'll want everyone who comes over to open."

Consumer- and professional-focused online services make it easy to design a unique album that tells the story of you and your partner. Popular photo book services like Artifact Uprising, Shutterfly and Mpix let you upload photos from your wedding day into a book you can then personalize. Get creative and DIY your album by including candids from the night as well as photos of the smaller details like color palette and cover material. An album tells a story: "You get to write it the way you want it to be remembered," says Jocelyn Voo, owner and photographer at Everly Studios.

At the end of this shopping guide, you'll find more information on what to keep in mind when searching for a wedding album. If you and your S.O. don't already have a wedding album or you're looking for a meaningful present for newlyweds, any one of these albums would make a great gift for the couple in your life (or you two!).

With this super sleek, minimalist frame you can store all of your wedding photos in once place. It has an HD display and includes free, unlimited cloud storage.

You'll need to have a Wi-Fi connection to set up the frame, but once you download the app, available for both iOS or Android, you can instantly add photos. You can also invite others to add photos and even videos, allowing guests to pitch in and share snippets from the night. The frame has an almost perfect rating online, and one five-star review says they purchased a second frame "for my son and his bride so that we can relive their wedding day and life as it progresses."

Planning a themed wedding with an air of cottage core? Purchase a wedding album that has a cover to match the photos you'll find inside. This Amazon's Choice vintage album has a 4.7-star rating thanks to over 2,300 online customer reviews praising the quality and beauty of the book.

Choose from three sizes and two colors, a dark green and reddish brown. The leather cover has intricate designs that exude old world charm. We appreciate how easy it is to add photos to this album: Simply lift the transparent overlay, arrange photos and memorabilia (while leaving some space between photos so the sheet can stick to the cardboard), slowly lower down overlay and smooth out.

Voo, who specializes in elopements and intimate weddings, says her album printer of choice is RedTree Albums. Note: The company only caters to professional photographers, so as a consumer you won't be able to personally design and place the order.

However, if you've already hired a photographer for the special day and want to take the hassle out of putting together a book, hiring the same photographer to also help you design a wedding album may be the way to go.

"The craftsmanship on their products is impeccable, and in my mind, well worth the hefty price for an heirloom product that's meant to last generations," says Voo. Alongside your photographer you can browse paper types, sizes and cover materials. Price depends on the type of album and customizations you chose. Premium albums can run as high as in the four figures, says Voo, but Queensberry Albums and Serendipity Albums are two professional services that offer more affordable albums starting in the low hundreds, she adds.

    Best Value Layflat Wedding Album

Nations Photo Lab The Wedding Album

    The Wedding Album
    Credit: Nations Photo Lab

For under $100, you can customize a traditional layflat photo album. Choose between seven sizes, four cover materials, various colors, and thick or thin pages. You can also increase the page count in increments of five starting at 10 and ending at 50, helping you avoid leftover pages at the end. If you want to customize your book further, add embossing or foil stamping on leather and linen covers.

The manufacturer recommends avoiding faces or important details in the center of a panoramic spread as that's where the book will fold when closed. One of the 164 online custom reviews says, "The picture quality was absolutely fantastic! It was half the cost to create our own rather than ordering one through our photographer!" It may not be the least expensive layflat option on this list, but its quality and bevy of customizable options make it a great value.

What to look for when choosing a wedding album

    double line break

When deciding which wedding album makes most sense for the story you want to tell, keep the following things in mind:

✔️ Page count: The number of pages in an album is one of the most important factors to consider. Some albums have a set number of sheets, while others have a minimum and maximum with adjustability in between. "The page count may also affect what album size or orientation that is available to you as well as the quality/type of paper and paper thickness that you can use," explains Feiden.

✔️ Paper type: Most photo album services offer a selection of paper types, from thick vs. thin options to matte, luster and glossy paper. Thicker paper will be more durable but higher quality paper does come at a higher price.

✔️ Orientation: Think about the orientation the majority of your photos will be taken, typically landscape or portrait. Some albums are also square in shape. If you prefer landscape images and want a layflat album to showcase a panoramic image, go for a landscape orientation. Meanwhile, if you want the focus on portraits of different family members, a vertical orientation may make more sense.

✔️ Material: The cover material is important as it's the part of the album you and others will probably see the most. Popular materials include linen, vegan leather and real leather as well as metal and wood.

✔️ Color: The number of cover colors you can choose from typically depends on the type of cover material you opt for. For example, if you select a leather-bound album then you'll probably have a selection of warm tans and browns to pick between, while a linen cover may have more fun colors available. Of course, some albums are only available in one or two colors.

✔️ Price: Our research suggests you can find an affordable album for as little as $10 to under $50. Other albums will cost more, ranging from $150 to $260 to over $500. How much you spend depends on your budget and which quality materials or add-ons you want to prioritize.

How to create a wedding album

    double line break

Before you start arranging photos in your album, think about the narrative you want to tell and the details you want to include to set the scene. Select shots of the dress, shoes and cake or images and portraits of you and important family members if you want a special focus on friends and family. Why not choose a few funny candids of you grooving on the dance floor if you want future generations to laugh at Mom and Dad way back when?

Once you have all the images you want to include in the album, group the photos by event and place them in chronological order. From there, let your creative juices guide decisions on templates, color palettes and more. "I also say design the inside first and then work on the cover," Feiden says. "Sometimes the inside design and the color palette of the day can help you decide what you want the cover to look like."
