Whether you’re ready to U-Haul or are looking for something more casual, dating is hard. Meeting people for friendship, let alone dating, can be challenging as an adult. There are bars, of course, though lesbian bars are rare in most cities. You can always get your friends to set you up with someone, but that has the risk of being very awkward for everyone involved. So, really, grabbing your phone and swiping on an app seems like the best bet. After all, most of us are already surgically attached to our devices anyway.

Hesitant? Well, online dating isn’t a sign you’re desperate, it’s one of the easiest ways to find people you might be compatible with. A study conducted by Match.com found that 56% of LGBTQ+ singles have gone on at least one date with someone they met online, with transgender people logging on the most, at 65%. Overall, half of all singles in the U.S. have put up a dating profile, according to Singles in America. Other research backs this up, and shows that sexual minorities are more likely than our heterosexual peers to use mobile dating apps.

Queer women are turning to the apps for intimacy (duh) but also to build community, and find friendships. Seeking women and nonbinary partners, it can be overwhelming to find an app that will match you with the types of people you’re attracted to, without having to sort through profiles of people you wouldn’t ever date. Avoiding the unwanted messages from cisgender straight men is also a problem with some dating apps. Well, consider the legwork done. These are the best lesbian dating apps on the market for queer women, to improve the chances you'll find someone who will make you want to delete the apps, and maybe rent that U-Haul.

The best part? They're all free to join.

Like to go old school? Lex is A text-based app! Designed for queer, trans, gender non-conforming, two spirit and nonbinary people, Lex is a digital version of newspaper personal ads in the back of the gay paper (some of us are retro enough to remember those)! Created not just as a dating app, but also queer social networking, Lex has a clear zero-tolerance policy for creepy or discriminatory behavior of any kind, including transphobia. So, you’ll feel comfortable making connections with new local and long distance friends…or maybe more. Being text based, Lex focuses on language we use for ourselves, and getting to know each other instead of just swiping on a sexy profile picture.
