Whatever your personal favorite kind of dog is, every year, the American Kennel Club releases a definitive ranking of the most popular dog breeds in the country. These are the dogs you’re most likely to see at doggy day care or at the dog park because of their adorable looks and playful personalities. Where does your favorite dog rank?

French Bulldogs

Small but full of personality, these spunky pups take first place as the most popular breed for the third year in a row. They’ve climbed the rankings over the last decade: In 2012, they were only ranked #14, but in 2022 they dethroned the Labrador Retriever to take the number one spot.

Labrador Retrievers

This athletic breed held the number one spot as the most popular breed for 31 years. Now Labs are enjoying a comfortable second place, but with their approachable temperament, we don’t think they mind.

Labs are "as American as baseball, hot dogs and apple pie," long-timer breeder Erin Henlon-Hall told the AKC.
