Whatever your personal favorite kind of dog is, every year, the American Kennel Club releases a definitive ranking of the most popular dog breeds in the country. These are the dogs you’re most likely to see at doggy day care or at the dog park because of their adorable looks and playful personalities. Where does your favorite dog rank?
French Bulldogs
Small but full of personality, these spunky pups take first place as the most popular breed for the third year in a row. They’ve climbed the rankings over the last decade: In 2012, they were only ranked #14, but in 2022 they dethroned the Labrador Retriever to take the number one spot.

Labrador Retrievers
This athletic breed held the number one spot as the most popular breed for 31 years. Now Labs are enjoying a comfortable second place, but with their approachable temperament, we don’t think they mind.
Labs are "as American as baseball, hot dogs and apple pie," long-timer breeder Erin Henlon-Hall told the AKC.
Golden Retrievers
Good natured and lovable, these fluffy friends are dependably friendly and always have a smile for you. They make great family dogs.
They're also the movie star of the group with starring roles on Full House, Air Bud and Homeward Bound.
German Shepherds
Don’t let their size intimidate you. These athletic pups are fiercely loyal to their owners, making them a great working breed for police units and service dogs.
Poodles
These pups aren’t just fancy, they’re also considered one of the smartest breeds. Their chic style with the classic “poodle cut” is iconic, but we love them with long fur as well. They come in standard, miniature, and toy size varieties.
Daschunds
How can you resist a wiener dog? Their stubby little legs and long, wiggly body are simply too goofy and charming not to love. Despite their small bodies, they have big personalities.
Beagles
These floppy-eared friends have soulful eyes and big hearts. They love to follow their nose, even when it causes some mischief!
Rottweilers
Known as protective guardians, Rottweilers can have a softer side as loving companions to their owners. These large dogs are very loyal, plus their tiny eyebrows are adorable.
Bulldogs
Presidents Calvin Coolidge and Warren Harding both owned bulldogs, so this breed has a presidential seal of approval. They’re known for their flat, wrinkly faces and muscular bodies.
German Shorthaired Pointers
These dogs love to be active and may have a signature speckled coat. They are known for their agility and endurance, making them great companions for running, hunting or sports.
