The study factored in school enrollment cut-offs, where children had to be five years old by September 1 in order to attend kindergarten, making the August babies the youngest in their classes. This suggests the possibility that some August babies are misdiagnosed due to their young age and relative immaturity.

An especially spectacular stargazing event, the Perseid meteor shower, reaches its maximum during this month between August 11 and 13. It boils down to the fact that most children have an annual doctor’s appointment around the time of their birthday, and flu shots usually aren't ready by August. The inconvenience of making another appointment means that summer babies end up less likely than fall babies to get a shot, and therefore 15% more likely to get the flu.
