If you just moved into a new apartment or home and are sleeping on an air mattress while you furnish the place, Amazon's October Prime Big Deal Days is here to help you find some of the best mattresses at a discounted price. Starting today October 8 to October 9, you can find mattresses on Amazon for less.

Pros in the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles, Paper & Apparel Lab are constantly evaluating the best mattresses available on the market from top-performing brands like Saatva, Casper, Helix and more. Fortunately, a few of our favorites are on sale.

But here's the deal: Historically speaking, Prime Day events in July and October may not see the best mattress sales. So if you are moderately satisfied with your current firm, hybrid, cooling or latex mattress, don't let Prime Day FOMO control your buying decisions.

When is the best time to buy a mattress?

Our experts say holiday weekends including Labor Day, Presidents' Day and Memorial Day are the best times to buy a new mattress. "While mattress companies offer discounts and sales throughout the year, a holiday weekend is when you'll see the most consistent and competitive offers across brands," explains Textiles, Paper & Apparel Lab Product Analyst Grace Wu. You can also snag mattresses at more affordable prices during Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, July 4th and Black Friday though, adds Wu.

Bottom line: Even though Prime Big Deal Days isn't the absolute best time to buy, there are notable deals on mattresses our experts love if you need a mattress ASAP.

Is Amazon a good place to buy a mattress?

Amazon is a great place to buy a mattress because you can get fast and free shipping and helpful delivery updates as a Prime member. This is a major perk because delivery can be pricey and unpredictable when ordering big furniture directly from the brand, says our expert. The convenience of having a new mattress show up on your doorstep in just two days is unmatched, especially in the mattress industry.

According to Amazon's return policy, you can request a return or refund within 100 days of shipment, which is similar to mattress brands' sleep trials. "Keep in mind that this policy only applies to mattresses directly shipped and sold from Amazon," points out Wu.

The best and only Prime Day mattress deals worth shopping

While it's true that right now isn't the absolute best time to buy a mattress, sometimes you don't have the luxury of waiting. If you need a mattress ASAP, these are the top savings right now on the top-tested mattresses, according to the Textiles Lab.

Saatva Classic Mattress

Saatva consistently comes out on top in several of our Lab tests. Its Classic Mattress checks all the boxes we test from quality materials and construction to stellar edge support and breathability. It uses two different layers of coils for extra support and durability. Our pros appreciate the complimentary white glove delivery and mattress removal, as well as the 365-night trial so you have plenty of time to decide if the mattress is a perfect fit.

Saatva is having a sitewide sales event from October 8 through October 10. Good Housekeeping readers can get $300 off purchases of $1,000 or more by shopping via our link. Note that Saatva isn't available on Amazon.

Bear Elite Hybrid

Not only have we included the Bear Elite Hybrid mattress in multiple product guides including the best soft and luxury mattresses, but it has also appeared in shop-worthy sale round-ups due to the brand's seasonal sales. Named best overall in our guide to best hybrid mattresses, the Elite Hybrid has been described as "nothing short of amazing" by multiple testers. Best for back or side sleepers and pain sufferers, the mattress has five zoned sections designed to promote proper spinal alignment, plus other areas offer more relief around the shoulders and extra support near the lower back.

If you want to try your first hybrid mattress, shop Bear for less during its Prime Sale from October 8 through October 9. You will get 35% off sitewide plus two free pillows with a mattress purchase.

Helix Dusk Luxe

We also recommend Helix mattresses for sleepers who like to snooze on a hybrid model. While the brand offers a wide selection of hybrid mattresses, the Dusk Luxe remains a favorite among our testers and survey panelists. We especially like its medium firmness that will satisfy every kind of sleeper, especially couples who have different sleeping preferences. Overall, it offers great support and pressure relief. One tester said, it's "not too soft so you don't sink in, but not so hard that it doesn't move to best support you." That sounds like an all-around win to us.

Use code GH27 for an exclusive 27% off sitewide during Prime Day on October 8 through October 9. Helix will also be offering non-exclusive sitewide sales of 25% off from October 8 through October 9.

Tuft & Needle Original Mattress

Tuft & Needle is another brand that appears in our general guide to the best mattress and historically sees markdowns during holiday weekends and sales events. Like the aforementioned brands (except Saatva), you can find Tuft & Needle mattresses on Amazon. Another pro to shopping its top-tested Original Mattress? It's already under $1,000. The all-foam mattress offers a surprisingly firm feel for a foam style. Testers gave top marks for motion isolation (i.e. you won't feel your partner get up in the middle of the night).

While the Original Mattress is on sale right now for 11% off, we haven't seen a Prime Day specific sale happening just yet — but stay tuned, we're expecting the price to dip even lower. For now, you can enjoy an already-affordable model with fast shipping, thanks to Prime two-day shipping.
