I've been covering kids' toys and gifts for Good Housekeeping since 2018, and people always ask me the same question: What are some go-to birthday gifts for kids?
Usually, I try to tailor my recommendations to the kid's age and interests, but sometimes that's not really the question. What they're actually asking me is, "What should I keep in my closet as a last-minute birthday gift that could work for anybody?"
For that, I say Crayola. The Scribble Scrubbie pets always do well in the Good Housekeeping Institute toy tests. Parents love the Color Wonder line because the markers only work on Color Wonder paper, so there's less chance of the "art" making it onto the walls or couches. And I always try to donate their art sets when it comes to end-of-year toy drives, because I figure what kid wouldn't want a new, fresh set of supplies?

The GH toy team hasn't had a chance to get our hands on them yet, but we saw them demonstrated at the New York Toy Fair earlier this year, and they definitely seem cool! (I particularly liked the spinning Colourwhirls marker top — mine spun for a long time, and it was extremely satisfying.)
Of course, toys aren't the only items getting discounted for Prime Day. For those who want to try and tackle their back-to-school shopping, there are also deals on markers and colored pencils. Even if the back-to-school lists aren't out yet, they might be good for anyone who needs a supply refresh. Believe me, no one wants to find out the night before a project is due that the old markers are dry!
