Unfortunately, another store is soon to join the ranks of JOANN Fabrics, Macy's, Kohl's and other big-name stores.

As Dollar General released its fourth quarter and fiscal year 2024 report on March 13, 2025, the company announced its intent to close 96 Dollar General store locations and 45 pOpshelf stores, its sister company for home decor shopping.

Here's everything we know so far about the store closures.

Why is Dollar General closing stores?

The decision comes after a "store portfolio optimization review," which "involved identifying stores for closure or re-bannering, based on an evaluation of individual store performance, expected future performance and operating conditions, among other factors."

While the closures may seem like an ominous sign for the company's future, Dollar General actually intends to open "575 new stores in the U.S. and up to 15 in Mexico" in 2025, with additional plans to remodel over 4,000 current locations.

The closures represent less than 1% of the company's overall repertoire, according to Dollar General's Chief Executive Officer, Todd Vasos.

Which Dollar General stores are closing?

Good Housekeeping reached out for a list of locations, but the company has yet to respond with specific stores. We do know, however, that closures are set to happen by May of this year.
