Sadly, more store closures are on the way, and the latest are associated with JCPenney.

The department store confirmed to Good Housekeeping that it would be shuttering more locations across the country in 2025. "While we do not have plans to significantly reduce our store count, we can confirm that there are eight isolated store closures planned by mid-year," a JCPenney spokesperson told us via email. They also said that the changes can be attributed to various influences, including "expiring leases agreements, market changes and other factors."

Back in 2020, the company revealed that it would be closing 242 stores after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. At the time, it was revealed that the remaining 604 stores "represent the highest sales-generating, most profitable and most productive stores in the network."

And in January, JCPenney announced a merger with SPARC brands, which consists of Aéropostale, Brooks Brothers, Eddie Bauer, Lucky Brand and Nautica, to form a new organization called Catalyst Brands. “Catalyst Brands brings together the rich heritage of six unique brands with modern energy and a new vision for success,” Marc Rosen, former chief executive officer of JCPenney, and current CEO of Catalyst Brands, said in a press release. “The word ‘catalyst’ reflects our drive to accelerate innovation and energy and amplify the impact of this powerhouse portfolio. Together, we bring scale, expertise and broad appeal to customers across America.”

In the email to Good Housekeeping, the JCPenney spokesperson did note that despite the change earlier this year, “closures are unrelated to the recent Catalyst Brands merger.”
