UPDATE 1/2/25: AeroGarden announced that it will resume operations in spring 2025. Learn more about the relaunch here.

The company that put hydroponic gardens on the map, AeroGarden, is closing. News of the company's closure was posted on the AeroGarden website and sent to customers via email. The announcement states that the closing, due to business challenges, is effective January 1, 2025.

We're sad to see it go — the brand makes our top-tested indoor herb garden and one of my personal favorite grow lights. The bittersweet news is that you can now get the Harvest 2.0 Indoor Garden — for 50% off. It's down to just $45, while supplies last.

AeroGarden Harvest 2.0 Indoor Garden Hydroponic System

Harvest 2.0 Indoor Garden Hydroponic System

The AeroGarden Harvest 2.0 has space for growing six different plant varieties at a time and claims to grow plants up to five times faster than soil. It includes an adjustable full-spectrum grow light, seed pods and liquid plant nutrients. No additional soil is required, and there’s a light that tells you when it's time to fill up the water and add plant food — which makes it very easy to tend to.

In testing, we found that herbs and lettuce grew so fast, they needed to be harvested every few days. While the Elite model that we tested at home is almost entirely sold out (for good), the Harvest 2.0 one has many of the same basic features.

And yes, we still recommend AeroGarden, even though it's shutting down. "I’ve used multiple AeroGardens for years and had success growing items like herbs and cherry tomatoes," says Nicole Papantoniou, director of GH's Kitchen Appliances & Innovation Lab. "Even though the brand is closing, I’d still feel confident buying the indoor gardens because they’ll last long, especially the ones without digital screens — they have less mechanics that could potentially go wrong."

My AeroGarden grow light has kept my desk pothos happy and healthy, despite our office’s dry air and fluorescent lighting.

A bit of irony is that Google just named "indoor garden" one of the top-searched gifts of 2024, as the search term peaks every holiday season. If anything, AeroGarden is likely shuddering due to increased competition. We've tested a few other indoor garden systems and are fans of the compact Click and Grow Smart Garden for those with limited kitchen space. If you're reading this after AeroGarden has sold out completely, check out some alternative GH Institute-recommended indoor gardens and grow lights here:

Can I still access my AeroGarden account?

The AeroGarden app, which powers its gardens and grow lights via Bluetooth, is still available for an "extended period of time" (though most products can function manually without the app). Customers will be able to access their accounts through March 1, 2026.

What else can I expect?

AeroGarden products purchased after the announcement will have a 90-day warranty instead of the former one-year warranty. As for the seed pods used to grow vegetables and herbs in your AeroGarden, there are still select varieties available on Amazon if you want to stock up. The company also noted that there are plenty of seed pods available via third-party sellers. One AeroGarden enthusiast even wrote a blog post about how she makes her own seed pods.
