Wedding trends change year after year, but traditions rarely do. In fact, the "something olde, something new, something borrowed, something blue, a sixpence in your shoe" is a mantra that modern brides still continue to incorporate in their ceremonies. And how they incorporate is always really fun to see, especially when it comes to the "something blue" aspect as it represents love and fidelity.

"'Something blue' is a lovely sentiment and a really fun way to include a pop of color in your day," Shannon O'Donnell, Co-Founder, Thirty4thStreet Productions, a New York City-based award-winning event planning service. "Most of our brides incorporate their "something blue" into one of their personal items. Some of our recent brides have done this through jewelry, accessories like shoes or a bag, a ribbon on their bouquet or even a piece of a garment from a loved one sewn into their dress." With that in mind, Shannon says that brides don't need to feel pressured to pay tribute to the sweet old English rhyme-inspired superstition that started back in the 1800s. "If the tradition is not for you, that's okay too. We never want our brides to feel forced into any traditions, so remaining authentic and true to yourself is always top priority!"

That said, if you're a bride who wants the hue of blue somewhere in your wedding, use our roundup of "something blue" wedding ideas as inspiration. Find ways to add an element of blue through statement earrings or a stunning pair of bright blue heels, or try a more unique option from our list, like a blue getaway car post-reception or altar decor.

"Be sure that it is incorporated in a meaningful way that feels personal and not just any old blue item because you feel like you have to," Shannon says. "There are a lot of obvious, as well as discrete, ways to incorporate something blue, so just do what works for you!"
