Feminism, the belief that all genders are equal, is for everyone. Although there have been feminist thinkers throughout history, the first formal wave of American feminism started in 1848, at the Seneca Falls Convention. But it was not until 1920 that the 19th amendment was ratified, finally giving women the same right to vote as men. This important landmark in women’s rights is celebrated every year on August 26 as Women’s Equality Day.

Although the holiday was established over 50 years ago, the fight for women’s equality continues today. Unfortunately, women still face harassment and discrimination, whether it’s getting catcalled on the street or the gender wage gap. These inequalities are also compounded by class and race, creating more extreme injustices for some women.

On Women’s Equality Day, we should reflect on the strength of the amazing women who have come before us, as well as everybody continuing to fight for equality today. These Women's Equality Day quotes are some of our favorite quotes from strong women to recognize this significant time.
