When a TV star leaves a show behind, especially one that thrusts them into the spotlight, fans are always eager to know why. No matter what the reason is, the act itself is always somewhat dramatic, sending shock waves through the star’s fan base. In the HGTV universe, a handful of stars have left the network to start their own ventures, pursue completely different passions, or simply take a break to spend time with their loved ones. So we’re taking a look at a few of the HGTV stars who have said goodbye to their shows — and their reasons why.

Galey Alix decided not to move forward with a second season of her HGTV show Home in a Heartbeat, which premiered in 2023. The show’s concept — making over whole homes in just one weekend — was so stress-inducing that she barely slept and broke out in hives. “We would be awake for sometimes 86 hours straight, going up and down ladders and installing drywall, lighting, built-ins, wallpaper — all while the cameras were filming," Alix told People in October 2024. "And then add on top of that, I'm also hosting, I'm also producing, I'm the contractor slash designer slash day-laborer. I was wearing so many hats. And my whole body was just literally decomposing in front of me."

After nine seasons of HGTV’s Rehab Addict and two spinoffs, Nicole Curtis took a hiatus during which she’s been building her own production company. “So even when I say I’m taking a break, and I do, we still roll cameras on really cool things because I’m like, ‘Eh, I’ll use it later to come back,’” Curtis told House Beautiful in July 2024. She’s also been spending more time with family and devoting efforts to saving old homes across the country. But she promises a TV comeback is in her future.

Following a whopping 19 seasons, Hilary Farr decided to leave Love It or List. She cited that the show was becoming too easy. As someone who loves a challenge, Farr wanted to take on new creative endeavors. Recently, she revealed she's working on a personal project: a kitchen renovation at her Toronto home. Farr also said her experience with breast cancer influenced her decision to leave the show, because it changed her outlook on life and how she's spending her time.

In 2017, Chip and Joanna Gaines announced that season five of Fixer Upper would be their last. “Our plan is to take this time to shore up and strengthen the spots that are weak, rest the places that are tired, and give lots of love and attention to both our family and our businesses,” they wrote on the Magnolia blog. About a year later, the home reno duo announced their plans to launch their own network—and the rest is history.
