Salma Hayek Pinault Opens Up About Her Approach to "Aging Gracefully"

The actress revealed her secret to gorgeous skin at 58, including the beauty products she swears by.

By

In the Celebrity edition of What's in My Cart, stars reveal the everyday products they're shopping — complemented by expert insights from our editors and analysts when it's something we love too.

When it comes to beauty standards for women of a certain age, Salma Hayek Pinault is here to set the record straight. "I don't know if the mindset [around aging] has changed that much or if it is that now women, when we are in our fifties, we're still hot," Salma tells Good Housekeeping. "But what is indisputable is that our generation broke many walls, and we are an incredible workforce."

The 58-year-old takes a "conservative approach to aging gracefully." As an actress — and a mother and a wife, she notes — "you want your face to stay your face, to look like you and be able to have all the expressions read easily. It's part of my identity and my personality." For Salma, this natural "philosophy for aging" always worked well ... until recently, when she started to feel insecure about her neck.

That's when she got a call from Merz Aesthetics about Ultherapy PRIME. The FDA-cleared, noninvasive treatment uses ultrasound energy to stimulate collagen and elastin production. Salma liked the results so much, she decided to partner with the brand officially. "I was having dinner with Victoria Beckham in London, and she said, 'You did something,'" Salma recalls. "She goes, I can tell! There's a big difference."

But the treatment isn't Salma's sole beauty secret; the actress shared her favorite everyday skincare and wellness products with us. Keep reading for her picks, including the surprising item she never travels without.

"Forest Essentials is an Ayurvedic brand from India, and they have this amazing Soundarya Beauty Oil," Salma says.

"You put it on, and it feels like an oil, but then there's no oil anymore! You are just dry and soft, there's zero grease. And it just smells like it's good for you."

The Rich Cream (15ml)

"I do not wash my face in the morning," Salma tells us. "I do put moisturizer on, but it depends on how my skin is feeling, what moisturizer I put. I don't have one routine. Same for the hair. I have different products and I just listen to my skin, listen to my hair."

The actress mentioned Augustinus Bader as one of the brands she uses regularly. Makeup artist Bobbi Brown also swears by The Rich Cream, a popular product among celebrities.

Patchology Rejuvenating Under Eye Gels

Rejuvenating Under Eye Gels

While she's a self-proclaimed "low maintenance" person, Salma swears by Patchology's eye gels. "These patches are fantastic and they're not expensive," she says.

The Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab agrees, selecting the Patchology Eye Gels as the best value eye patches, according to testing. "Clocking in at about $1.50 per use, these under eye gel masks are a budget-friendly choice that deliver serious results," writes Jessica Teich, director of editorial commerce and product reviews.

Simply Organic Ground Turmeric Root

Ground Turmeric Root

Salma is all about wellness, and that includes what she eats and drinks. "There's this anti-inflammatory drink that I make with almond milk, turmeric, ginger, cinnamon and a little bit of black pepper to increase the turmeric power," she shares.

"I put in a little bit of Manuka honey at the end, and it's so soothing and delicious, and it feels good. I love coffee and I drink a lot of coffee, but I am noticing that I'm mixing it up more and more with that drink and I love it."

Salma's Travel Essential

Vicks VapoRub

VapoRub

When she's traveling, especially on planes, Salma's number one essential is Vicks VapoRub. "I put it in my nose and it just feels like I'm breathing better on the plane. Also my nose doesn't get as dry inside. I put it on the soles of my feet — and if you are coughing, it's a Mexican thing, but it helps you cough less."

"The beauty of Vicks VapoRub is that it works topically. When rubbed on the chest, neck or back, the traditional camphor, menthol and eucalyptus ointment can temporarily relieve discomfort and help you breathe easier," Deputy Health Editor Kaitlyn Phoenix previously wrote in our story on doctor-approved natural remedies for a sore throat.

Salma's Self-Care Must

Bose SoundLink Flex Bluetooth Speaker

SoundLink Flex Bluetooth Speaker

"I meditate a lot. I invent my own meditation, I improvise it every day. A lot of times I use music and creativity. And I dance a lot. I don't go to classes. I don't believe in the structure. But I dance at provocation, and I have music on a lot. So the provocation could be 10 times a day, shamelessly. And my daughters are the same," Salma reveals.

"I bring my speaker everywhere I go," she adds. While she didn't specify a brand, the Bose SoundLink Flex is the Good Housekeeping Institute's best overall bluetooth speaker pick, according to testing and reviews.
