Katie Austin Reveals Her Workout and Skincare Routines

Denise Austin's daughter is following in her footsteps, sharing lifestyle tips for a new generation.

By

In the Celebrity edition of What's in My Cart, stars reveal the everyday products they're shopping — complemented by expert insights from our editors and analysts when it's something we love too.

Fitness runs in the family for Katie Austin, the 31-year-old daughter of iconic fitness instructor Denise Austin. Sharing simple workouts, easy recipes and lifestyle tips on her website and the Katie Austin App, the former D1 athlete and certified fitness trainer learned from the best.

"I feel like she's taught me everything in my life," Katie tells Good Housekeeping. "She's not only my mom, but my best friend, my mentor. I'm very lucky that I grew up with her as my mom, and now I'm doing what she did in the '80s, '90s and early 2000s — so it's kind of crazy to have her as my mentor."

While Katie says that choosing just one top piece of advice from her mom is "really hard," she admires how Denise has always had a mentality of "life is what you make it."

"She's really a believer in how special every day is. And this is what I got from her, because I've watched her my whole life and [I've seen] how she stayed so happy and so positive throughout such dark moments in her life. She didn't have everything growing up. And she has had really hard moments in her life, but still sees the good in every single person. She really has these sparks of joy," Katie gushes.

"Even my husband, when he met her, he was like, 'You know what I love about your mom? She gets excited about every little thing.' I feel like that's how you have to live to be fulfilled, because we live in this life where you can always want more and not be good enough. And I think for my mom, she's happy with so many little things, even though she does have an amazing life, and she's grateful for the bigger things. But those sparks of joy can really add so much light to your day."

When it comes to things that give Katie a little spark of joy, her everyday skin and beauty essentials can be added to the list. Keep reading for all her favorites, including her "holy grail" skincare product and the hair tool she says "literally changed [her] life."

iS CLINICAL Cleansing Complex

"For the longest time, I used so many different products. I struggled with acne since I was 21 years old, and I always thought adding more products and doing the most would help. It actually was exactly the opposite," Katie says.

"Right now, my favorite skin product at night is iS CLINICAL." She washes her face before bed with their Cleansing Complex.

The Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab chose the brand's Cleansing Complex Polish, an exfoliating version of its cult-favorite Cleansing Complex, as one of the best face scrubs according to testing.

"Despite it being so gentle, my skin feels significantly smoother and more supple even after just one use," said former beauty assistant Catharine Malzahn.

"Narrowing my skincare routine down to three products that I use at night, keeping it as simple as possible, helps me so much," Katie says.

Along with their cleanser, she uses the iS CLINICAL moisturizer before bed.

BABOR HY-OL Cleanser

"I actually don't cleanse my face in the morning. I have learned that over-cleansing my face, I tend to dry out. I think my problem when I was in my twenties was I actually washed my face too much," Katie says.

"If I'm working out with makeup on, I'll wash my face immediately afterwards. If I am wearing makeup [during the day], I cleanse before [bed] with BABOR cleansing oil."

"For my hair, I love, love, love my heatless curls. I love The Sleepy Tie. I do not know how to curl my own hair, so heatless curls have literally changed my life," Katie reveals.

"My nighttime routine usually consists of doing my skincare, putting in my heatless curls — if I have something the next morning, I'm not working out with that — to make sure my hair is looking good."

Katie's Go-to Concealer

Tarte Shape Tape Concealer

Shape Tape Concealer

"I'm obsessed with the Tarte Shape Tape. It actually is freaking amazing, because I have really bad melasma and I have tried everything for it. I know you can do all the different medications, but I did the medications heavily before my wedding, so I'm trying to take a break off of them. When I do my live workouts, you can really see my melasma. So I just put a tiny bit of the Tarte Shape Tape Concealer over it," Katie explains.

The Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty, Health & Sustainability Lab tested 26 concealers and selected Tarte Shape Tape as the best for dark spots. "Our testers thought it excelled in pigmentation coverage and spreadability ... which is why this formula is best for problem areas [like] scars, blemishes and rosacea."

Katie keeps it super simple when it comes to everyday makeup. "I think if I was to say if I'm putting on two things, it would be a tiny bit of concealer, and then I'm obsessed with the Dibs Beauty Blush Stick," she says.

"I just do a tiny bit and I even dab it with my fingers. That's really all I do."

Katie's Workout Essential

Gaiam Cork Yoga Exercise Mat

Cork Yoga Exercise Mat

"So much is thrown at us in wellness culture. My messaging really is, you need minimal things to get started. I would say a mat is probably where to start," Katie says.

"I actually love the cheapest mat, because some mats these days are really heavy. And the foldable mats, they can slip and slide on you. Especially if you're doing a strength workout, you want something that's stable. If you're going for a nicer mat, I love a cork mat just because it doesn't shift around. I love any mat that has grip," Katie stresses.

"And I always love a comfy workout outfit. If they're leggings that hug you too tight, I am not interested in doing sit-ups, you know? Let's go back to basics and not put too much pressure on ourselves with what we need. We need comfy clothes, a nice mat."

Fit Simplify Resistance Loop Exercise Bands, Set of 5

Resistance Loop Exercise Bands, Set of 5

"If you want to invest in workout products, there are so many wonderful things about a resistance band. You can travel with it, there are different resistances with bands," Katie adds. "If you're looking for just one item, a band would probably be the most accessible."

This set of five resistance bands includes varying resistance levels, from extra light to extra heavy. It also comes with a carrying case for easy transport. At just $10, it's the Good Housekeeping Institute's pick for the best value resistance bands.

"If you're a beginner who doesn't want to splurge on bands but does want to get acquainted with using them, this is a great choice," our experts say.

Katie Austin Treadmill and Walking Pad

Treadmill and Walking Pad

When it comes to her workout routine, Katie says every day is different, but she does have a few go-tos. "I stick to Mat Pilates two to three times a week and then strength training two times a week. I also walk another two days a week, long walks. With the combination of all of those, that's how I see my best results and I stay motivated," Katie explains.

"With all these, it's only 30 minutes (besides walking, I usually will walk for about an hour)."

While she acknowledges that it isn't as accessible as resistance bands or a mat, Katie also sells a treadmill. "I love it as a work break walk or if it's dark outside and I want to get a walk in, or to get my steps in while I'm on a phone call. It's wonderful."

"Let's keep it simple. Let's not think we have to do all these things to be healthy. It can be very simple: eating your nutrients, moving your body for 20 to 30 minutes daily," Katie points out.

"If I'm staying in a routine, I'm traveling with my workouts because that's how I stay sane and I stay in a routine. All you really need is 20 minutes for your mental health and your productivity and your positivity to wake up and feel like you're in a sense of routine."

"All my workouts on the Katie Austin app and platform are only 30 minutes to see results. They're efficient, they're effective," Katie continues.

Katie's Must-Have Kitchen Tool

Mueller Immersion Multi-Purpose Hand Blender

Immersion Multi-Purpose Hand Blender

Katie's "passion project right now" is her new digital cooking show, Come on In. " She makes fun family recipes and shares them on YouTube. "I produce it on my own, I created it, I do all the recipes by myself. It's all just a really fun journey," she shares.

Recent episodes include Lemon Ricotta Protein Pancakes and Chicken Piccata with Angel Hair (that one features her mom, Denise).

When it comes to kitchen tools, "I think a handheld immersion blender is wonderful to invest in, because there are so many ways you can use it: for blending when you don't want to take out the whole blender, or if you just want something mashed — like mashed potatoes," Katie says.

She loves this Mueller Immersion Hand Blender, calling it her "favorite for sure." She's tried a few different brands, and likes this one the best.
