Brooke Shields has built quite a career as an actress and model. Between starring in hit projects and gracing the covers of fashion magazines, she's also passionate about embracing beauty on her own terms. Her new haircare line, Commence, is focused on "addressing people over 40 and the challenges they face being on the journey of aging," she tells Good Housekeeping in an exclusive interview. "And we're solving it in a legitimate way."

With aging comes hormonal shifts, something beauty brands don't always think about in the age of social media. But Brooke is adamant about supporting people through the process of aging, all while using science to find ways to make them feel beautiful.

"There has been so much growth that I've experienced in just the short amount of time I've been in an industry I have never really learned about," Brooke says. "Yes, I was a model, but I never thought I would become a beauty brand founder or CEO. The most exciting and invigorating piece of this for me has been to watch people respond about the products. They're seeing a positive change."

Along with revealing how she uses some of her favorite haircare products from the line (she's been really into one of Commence's newest launches, the Shine-Enhancing Detangler), Brooke also shared other beauty and self-care must-haves she says help her embrace her innermost self.

Brooke's "Hero" Hair Product

Commence 2-in-1 Instant Dry Shampoo

2-in-1 Instant Dry Shampoo

Brooke calls this dry shampoo a "hero" product from Commence, saying how it's helped her with hair issues that she was apprehensive about over the years.

"I feared what products were doing to my scalp and stripping my hair — or if I've paid for a good blowout and a good style, I want to make it last," she explains. "So my first hero is the instant dry shampoo, because it solves a lot of issues for me."

A Must for Brooke's Daughters

Commence 3-in-1 Leave-In Conditioner

3-in-1 Leave-In Conditioner

Brooke's daughters Rowan and Grier love adding this leave-in conditioner to their everyday routines — and not just because it's a product from their mother's line. In fact, Grier found a sentimental way to use this as a bonding moment between them.

"I love it when she sits in between my legs and I'm on the couch and braiding her hair," Brooke gushes. "I will braid her hair with the leave-in conditioner, because it makes it easier to separate a braid. And then by morning, it's not at all wet, it's just supple and still has body and all the wave. She's obsessed with that."

Brooke shared how she uses this product, and we want to try her hack for ourselves.

"When I've had my hair styled, the interim between when I get it styled and when I want to wash it again, I get really knotted up," she reveals. "So, I always have this with me to make sure I'm good. I'll even put it on right out of an exercise class, because it helps me get through and it doesn't weigh your hair down."

As someone who struggles with allergies, Brooke has this with her at all times.

"My eyes are always red, and I always have Lumify in my bag," she says. "I was using something else, and my eyes started getting redder. So, I always have that, and every makeup artist I work with always has it."

GrandeLASH-MD Lash Enhancing Serum

Brooke swears by the GrandeLASH-MD serum to help grow her eyelashes. She loves to use it along with the brand's conditioning mascara.

"I use GrandeLash on my line, and that's basically extended the growth phase of the hair follicle, so they actually grow longer and for longer," she explains. "And whenever I put mascara on, I always like to wedge it into the lash line so it almost works as an eyeliner."

Alongside the eyelash serum Brooke uses, she also found a unique way to help keep her brows and lashes on point for whatever event she may be going to.

"I use these for my eyebrows and my eyelashes, to separate my mascara with them," she says. "And the ones that are bent are really good, because you can just wiggle them through at an angle."

A Makeup Tip from Brooke's Daughter

Jones Road Moisturizing Miracle Balm

Moisturizing Miracle Balm

Brooke revealed her daughter Grier worked for Jones Road over the summer, and she came back with all the tricks of the makeup trade. Well, it certainly came in handy, since she had to teach her mom a thing or two about using this complexion product.

"[Grier] had to teach me how to use it, because I was using it as moisturizer," she laughs. "And then I was going out into the sun, and people were like, 'What is all over your face?' She said, 'Mom, you have to press it into the spots that you want!' And I was like, 'The girl in the picture has it all over her face!'"

When Brooke isn't busy working on set, she likes to focus on one-track projects that help her as a form of meditation. She couldn't stop sharing her love for all things needlepoint, which she finds to be a therapeutic hobby.

"I usually have needlepoint with me, because I need to single focus. Otherwise [my] brain sort of spins out," she says. "When I'm working, I have to do something like that, because otherwise I get too attached to the project."

While she didn't specify an exact product, this kit is a GH recommendation for an easy to customize cross-stitch kit for beginners.

And when Brooke isn't working on a needlepoint project, she loves to have a book with her as well. She recommends this novel as the next title to add to your TBR list, as she's thoroughly enjoying it right now.

"I always feel like I have to read something," she says. "I also try to read books my daughters want me to get into."
