This St. Patrick's Day, after you've finished all the green beer, cooked a hearty Irish meal, finished it off with a sweet Irish dessert and sang your favorite Irish songs, the best way to end the day is flopping down on the couch to watch a great Irish movie.
If you're a Netflix subscriber, you're in luck, because you have a dozen or so choices right there. These are the best Irish movies on Netflix right now. Although 12 isn't a huge number, they do span different genres: Some of them are funny Irish films meant to tickle your funny bone. Others are more serious, looking into historical events and newsworthy happenings from decades ago. You can find romantic comedies, a family-friendly film, some awards-worthy performances and a whole host of action, too. There's even a few Irish TV series on Netflix thrown in there for good measure. Then, you can move on to the best Irish movies of all-time and see some of the other films that are (sadly) not available on Netflix. Whatever you choose, you'll walk away with the luck of the Irish.
The Wonder (2022)
Florence Pugh stars as an English nurse sent to rural Ireland to investigate a miracle: A tween girl claims she hasn't eaten a crumb for months, yet she continues to live with no apparent health consequences. Is she truly blessed, or is she just trying to get pilgrims to visit her town? The movie is based on a novel by Emma Donoghue, who also wrote Room.
The Foreigner (2017)
Jackie Chan goes up against the Irish Republican Army in this film, which has Chan seeking to avenge a terrorist bombing on his own after he gets little help from Scotland Yard. Pierce Brosnan co-stars as foil Liam Hennessy, a Sinn Féin politician and IRA member.
Riverdance: The Animated Adventure (2022)
Here's one that you can watch with the whole family: Riverdance follows a boy named Keegan who, after the loss of his grandfather, goes on an adventure that weaves together magic, lore and, of course, dancing.
The Siege of Jadotville (2016)
What's an Irish stream-a-thon without an appearance by Belfast star Jamie Dornan? You don't get to hear his Irish accent in the Fifty Shades of Grey series, but you can hear it here, in this movie about Irish soldiers on a U.N. peacekeeping mission in Africa.
Leap Year (2010)
According to Irish lore, if a woman proposes on February 29, a man has to accept. Amy Adams plays Anna, a real-estate stager who tries to put that lore to the test with her boyfriend, a cardiologist she's been dating for four years. All goes according to plan until Anna meets Declan, a local innkeeper who agrees to drive her to Dublin after she gets waylaid in Cork. Though it's Irish in location only, it's a good one to throw on when you're looking for a rom-com.
ReMastered: The Miami Showband Massacre (2019)
The Miami Showband was one of the most popular bar bands in Ireland in the '70s, but during a time of unrest, members of a paramilitary group attacked a gig, killing five people including most of the band. In this documentary, a surviving band member tries to get to the bottom of what happened.
Brain on Fire (2016)
Based on the memoir by Susannah Cahalan, this movie follows a young reporter who searches for a reason behind her seizures, psychosis and memory loss. Though the medical-mystery movie is an Irish production, it stars Chloe Grace Moretz and takes place in New York.
Derry Girls (2018)
Admittedly, Derry Girls is a TV series and not a movie, but with just a dozen half-hour episodes per season, you can basically watch an entire season in the time it takes to watch a long movie. And, once you start, you just might take it all in one sitting: The show follows a group of high schoolers in Northern Ireland in the 1990s as they get up to hilarious hijinx. The third and final season came to Netflix in 2022.
Rebellion (2016)
On a grimmer note, this five-episode miniseries starts at the outbreak of World War I and goes through Dublin's violent Easter Rising of 1916. It follows a group of fictional characters living in Dublin, Belfast and London.
Sophie: A Murder in West Cork (2021)
For true crime aficionados, this three-part docuseries investigates a crime that shocked rural Ireland in the '90s. The doc not only looks into the disturbing details of her death, but shows how grief still affects those who knew her.
