• Luke Grimes is starring in the Yellowstone spinoff Y: Marshals, premiering on CBS in midseason 2026.
  • The actor spoke with People about returning to his role as Kayce Dutton in a new way.
  • He also noted the struggles he's facing with coming back into the Yellowstone universe.

It's been six months since Yellowstone ended, but Luke Grimes' time as Kayce Dutton is continuing with the CBS spinoff series Y: Marshals. As he takes on a new era for his character, he's giving some insight into a challenge he didn't expect to come from it.

Luke spoke to People in an interview published on June 24 about the prospect of reprising his beloved character from the original Paramount Network series. While he's excited for viewers to see Kayce again when Y: Marshals premieres in midseason 2026 on CBS, he admitted to feeling slightly unprepared for the change that he will experience in creating the new series.

"[It's been a] really bizarre transition," he told the outlet about playing Kayce again just months after Yellowstone's official end on TV. "To go back into it in a new set of circumstances is going to be kind of a transition. It'll be weird. There's going to be familiar faces, but there's going to be a lot of new faces. So, we'll see how that all feels."

But that's not all Luke had to say about coming back to the Yellowstone universe. Even though he never expected to be playing Kayce again, the actor and singer was eventually convinced after hearing how his character could evolve in a spinoff.

"[My first thought] was, 'Where do you go from there?'" he added to the outlet about expanding Kayce's storyline in Y: Marshals. "We definitely wanted to make sure to give it a real story and make it interesting and make it believable. If it was just like, 'well, he's happy' — we're just going to watch him be happy? That's not very cool. But I'll say this, the idea that was pitched to me is very, very good and very interesting and it really roped me in and I think it will rope the audience in as well."

Now, let's not forget — Luke isn't the only one coming back into the world of Yellowstone. Kelly Reilly (who portrayed Kayce's sister Beth Dutton) and Cole Hauser (who played Beth's husband Rip Wheeler) are also set to return to the Yellowstone fold with their own spinoff series. While fewer details are known about their TV show, it's nice to know we'll get to see the original Duttons on our screens again.
