This story contains major spoilers for Sullivan's Crossing season 3, episode 1.
Ahead of the Sullivan's Crossing season 3 premiere on May 14, fans are desperate to know what's to come for their favorite players living at the Crossing. Well, Morgan Kohan is weighing in on a particularly crucial moment for her character Maggie Sullivan ... and how this affects her future relationships on the show.
In the season 3 premiere, fans of the CW drama discover something devastating involving Maggie's impending road to motherhood. Viewers watched as she learned she was pregnant with her ex-fiancé's baby partway through season 2, along with her plans to keep the baby and raise it on her own. But as folks learn, Maggie unfortunately suffers a miscarriage — and her journey toward healing is one that her loved ones are by her side for in special ways.
Speaking to Good Housekeeping before season 3, episode 1 aired, she explained how essential it was for her to not take the storyline of Maggie's miscarriage lightly.
"I think it was a really important storyline to bring up this season, as this topic is not talked about as much as it should be," she told us. "It affects so many different people in many capacities — whether it's happened to you or someone you love. I was definitely nervous to portray it respectfully and in the right capacity to be honest and help people feel seen."
Luckily, viewers know Maggie doesn't have to bear the weight of her miscarriage alone. She has the support of her new boyfriend Cal Jones (Chad Michael Murray), who helps her take the first step of acknowledging her pain from everything she's experiencing. As for how Cal supports Maggie, he stands by her as she openly grieves the heartbreaking loss ... all while the couple have an emotional moment as they plant a tree in the baby's honor.
When Morgan shared what it was like to work with Chad during such a heavy time in their characters' relationship, she said she was grateful to have him by her side during filming. What's more, she emphasized just how important it was to have a crew who understood the undertaking of telling Maggie's story.
"We have such a wonderful cast and crew who are so supportive and respectful during scenes like this," she said. "As Maggie is held in a different way, I feel very held by Chad and everyone on set, just making sure everybody is quiet and calm. Everyone was aware that these were highly emotional scenes Chad and I were doing, and I felt very allowed to just go full in on it."
As for how Maggie's story unfolds throughout the rest of Sullivan's Crossing season 3, viewers will need to tune in every Wednesday night. Regardless, Morgan is humbled to see how fans react to this emotional trajectory for her character ... and how Maggie and Cal's romance evolves with it.
"There are always going to be things that come up that [Maggie and Cal] haven't accounted for and not expecting," she concluded. "I think this will be a testament to their relationship of how they handle everything and how they move forward in season 3."
Sullivan's Crossing season 3 airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET on the CW.
