Bad news, Matthew Gray Gubler fans. It looks like it may be some time before we get to see the actor light up our TV screens on a consistent basis.

For the last six months, CBS has been teasing fans about the possibility of the Criminal Minds alum making his way back to television with the new drama Einstein. After the show filmed a pilot in early March, the network ignited viewers' excitement by giving Einstein a full-series order and a fall 2025 premiere date.

Well, in a new announcement made by Deadline on April 29, it looks like Matthew's return to TV is going to be delayed. According to the outlet, CBS decided to push the premiere date of Einstein one year, so it will instead premiere during the 2026-2027 TV season. As for the reason behind the unexpected move, the publication noted it likely has to do with potential scheduling conflicts due to the number of shows slated to debut in the fall of 2025.

Even though Einstein (and subsequently, Matthew) is still on track to debut on CBS in the future, the unforeseen premiere date snag left fans in quite an outrage on social media.

"WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS TO ME," one person cried out on X (formerly Twitter). "DELAYED???" another questioned. "I’ll riot," a different follower added.

Even though Matthew isn't going to headline his own TV show for the next little bit, he's still about to appear on the small screen ... and it's in a role fans already love him for.

As viewers may already know, Matthew is slated to reprise his role as Dr. Spencer Reid for an episode of Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3 (season 18 overall). And while details behind his guest appearance are still under wraps, showrunner Erica Messer teased to Entertainment Weekly that Matthew will show up for what appears to be an emotional reason.

"Without spoiling anything, when you really need your friends, it's usually big life things are happening," she told the outlet in early April. "So, I will say that the big life thing is happening and we get to see Spencer."

At least there's something to look forward to!
