It's official, Matthew Gray Gubler fans: your favorite actor is officially coming back to TV.
It's been six months since fans first heard about the Criminal Minds alum potentially returning to the small screen in a brand-new CBS procedural drama called Einstein. While it was unclear whether the network would pick up the series for a full season, folks also got excited when they saw the pilot was officially filming in early March 2025. So, what does this all mean for both Matthew and his future on TV?
Well, in a surprise announcement made by CBS on April 22, it looks like Einstein will officially make its way to TV in the fall of 2025. And if that's not enough, Variety reports Matthew will portray the titular role of Lewis Einstein, with Rosa Salazar set to portray Veronica "Ronni" Paris.
When word about Matthew's major career update began to spread on social media, it didn't take long before fans had to voice their excitement about it.
"OMG! How exciting!! 👏🤸♀️🤸♀️🤸♀️ We are SOOOOO PROUD OF YOU, Matthew!!!❤️❤️," one person exclaimed on Instagram. "He’s so deserving 💜," another declared. "So exciting!" a different follower added.
Well, would you look at that? This is definitely not what we were expecting ... but we can't wait to see what Matthew has in store for us!
Now, what exactly will Einstein be about? According to an official logline from Deadline, the show will follow the "brilliant but directionless great grandson of Albert Einstein." A comfortable and lackadaisical tenured professor, things take a turn when "his bad boy antics land him in trouble with the law" and he eventually gets roped into solving cases with a local police detective.
What's more, this isn't the only time viewers will get to see Matthew on their TV screens this year. Five years after he last played Dr. Spencer Reid on Criminal Minds, he'll reprise the role for an episode of Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3 (season 18 overall) in May 2025.
Congrats, and so exciting!
