It's time to tune into HBO and Max, because we're getting back in step with Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder).
Ever since Hacks first aired on HBO and Max in May 2021, the story of an aging Las Vegas comedian looking to reinvent herself has captured viewers' attention. With hijinks seen throughout, bonds forged between unexpected characters and a storyline that continues to feel fresh, it's easy to see why people love the show. And couple that with the fact Jean has won multiple accolades for her portrayal of Deborah, it's easy to say Hacks is an overall success.
As season 4 officially premieres on HBO and Max beginning April 10, 2025, it's likely fans will want to know more about the show's future. Mainly, is Hacks returning for season 5? This may come as a surprise, but there might already be an answer from the show's creators.
Is Hacks returning for season 5?
While Hacks has yet to be renewed for season 5, it may very well be in the works. When speaking with Deadline back in May 2024 about the possibility, co-creators and showrunners Paul W. Downs and Jen Statsky mentioned they always intended for the show to have a five-season arc. What's more, Paul revealed there was always a vision for how Hacks would end — but one of Max's executives wanted to be kept in the dark.
"It’s a really interesting thing," Paul told the outlet at the time. "All of the networks knew the end of the show, and [Max comedy chief] Suzanna [Makkos] cut us off before we got there and said, 'I get the show, it’s bought, we don’t need to keep doing this.'"
"She’s the only one who doesn’t know how it ends," Jen added.
In the same interview, though, Jean had other thoughts about how long Hacks could go on for. While they were told the span of the show would be only five seasons, she may have switched her mindset amid all of its success.
"They said they had five seasons of this in their heads, but that was it," Jean noted. "Well, then it was five… it might be different now."
As for where Hacks could go in a new season, Jen teased there's a lot more to play with in terms of Deborah and Ava's bond after season 4.
"I think keeping the relationship fresh and making sure there are new places for Deborah and Ava to go, that is the beating heart of the show," Jen stated to Collider in April 2025. "If we found a way [to do more] that made sense, then maybe, yeah. But right now, that is still the plan."
Well, we'll certainly be along for the ride either way!
