Writer Taylor Sheridan star has been on a meteoric rise over the last several years. His hit Western drama Yellowstone quickly became must-watch television after it debuted in 2018, spinning off multiple prequels and sequels, as well as a full slate of unrelated projects dreamed up and helmed by Sheridan himself. Despite his long roster of projects, Sheridan has remained famously hands-on with his shows—at least, it seems, until the latest season of 1923.
Following a hiatus that was prolonged by the guild strikes last year, 1923 began airing its second season in February, but according to one star, Sheridan was noticeably absent during filming. Former Game of Thrones star Jerome Flynn, who plays the sheep farmer and Dutton antagonist Banner Creighton on the series, told RadioTimes, “He’s so close to Ben [Richardson] the director – who directed every episode – that they work together as a team, and he trusts him implicitly.” He added, “Taylor’s so busy working on the plethora of other stuff that’s coming through him. No, we never saw him on set.”
As for the season (and possibly series) finale, set to debut on April 13, 2025, Flynn called it “emotionally raw and poignant,” later adding, “The whole crew, we were collectively conjuring this story. There are times where it felt like I didn’t need to act."
1923 tells the story of a previous generation of Yellowstone’s Dutton clan and stars Helen Mirren, Harrison Ford, and Timothy Dalton, among its expansive cast. While it's still unconfirmed whether season 2 will be its last, it’s not the only Dutton story Sheridan has in the works. In addition to the previous 1883, in 2023 Paramount+, which serves as a home for the Yellowstone prequels, announced that they had picked up another entry into the family’s saga, tentatively titled 1944.
Elsewhere in the Yellowstone universe, filming on the flagship series’s spinoff The Madison reportedly began late last year, but so far no dates have been announced for its debut. Likewise, despite persistent speculation and seeming-confirmations, there’s still been no official word on the long-rumored Yellowstone spinoff centered on fan-favorite character Rip and Beth.
