The 2025 Oscars are officially here — and we are so ready to find out which movies are going to win on Hollywood's biggest night.
The star-studded ceremony is taking place on March 2 in Los Angeles, and musical theater folks are desperate to see Wicked make a splash throughout the night. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande are nominated for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, respectively, for stellar performances as Elphaba and Galinda. Plus, the movie could potentially win Best Picture along with other big awards tonight.
But as we watch Cynthia, Ariana, Bowen Yang (who portrayed Pfannee), Ethan Slater (who played Boq), Marissa Bode (who portrayed Nessarose) and Jeff Goldblum (who portrayed the Wizard) do their thing on the Oscars red carpet, we're all wondering whether Jonathan Bailey (who plays Fiyero) will appear at the ceremony as well. Unfortunately, it seems highly unlikely that he'll make it to the 2025 Oscars — but he has a very good reason for skipping the festivities.
Although there is no official word behind his absence, fans of the Bridgerton alum know he's likely not there due to prior work commitments keeping him in his hometown of London, England.
Back in November 2024, Jonathan announced he would be stepping into the role of Richard II in a revival of William Shakespeare's Richard II in early 2025. The play officially started playing performances on the West End on February 10, and Jonathan is slated to portray the titular character for the entire run through May 10.
What's more, this isn't the first time Jonathan has skipped an awards ceremony this year due to starring in Richard II. Much to the chagrin of folks at the time, he missed out on attending the 2025 SAG Awards back in February — despite receiving multiple nominations for his work in Wicked and Bridgerton.
No matter the case, we just know Jonathan is cheering on his Wicked cast from across the pond!
