Kelly Ripa called out a common nighttime habit, and fans have thoughts.

During the June 4 episode of Live With Kelly and Mark, Kelly and her husband, Mark Consuelos, got on the topic of going to be bed with wet hair. To the surprise of the audience, Kelly had very strong feelings about it.

"How bad is it to go to bed with wet hair? It's SO bad!" she began in the clip posted on Instagram. But even though she knows it's bad, she can't help but do it every once in a while, she admitted.

However, she then went on to read to the audience that dermatologists say sleeping on wet hair can cause a myriad of issues (like breakage to the strands while tossing and turning at night). "The good news is, it's saying that you could invest in a satin or silk pillowcase — so I do that! — because that creates less friction," she added. "Try hair oil — I do that."

This proved to be a hot topic online, because when the clip was posted, hundreds of fans took the comments section to discuss it.

"This is what I have been trying to tell everyone!!" one person exclaimed in the comments. "When I make this mistake [the] next morning I get a sore throat," another wrote. "A definite DON’T, causes damage!" a different viewer added.

Then, there were some fans who disagreed.

"Hmm 53 been doing my entire life," one person noted. "I do this every time," another agreed, "I have and turns out beautifully in the morning," a different follower replied.

When hairstylist and Queer Eye star Jonathan Van Ness appeared later in the episode, Kelly also brought up the controversial habit.

"You guys, I think the rumors are true," Jonathan said. "I think it's not good. It'd be like sleeping with a wet rat on your face every night."

We confirmed with our own Beauty Lab experts to settle the debate once and for all. "Sleeping with wet hair is generally not recommended by the Lab because wet hair is more fragile and prone to breakage," says Beauty Lab Director Sabina Wizemann. "Tossing and turning during sleep can cause strain and breakage. Also, a damp environment can promote the growth of bacteria and fungi, and it may lead to scalp issues, like dandruff or infections."

So, while it's definitely personal choice, it's good to keep these factors in mind the next time you drift off to sleep!
