Get ready, NCIS fans: Tony DiNozzo is officially back ... and he's here to stay in a way we didn't see coming.
After Michael Weatherly surprised fans by reprising his role for a season 21 guest appearance in February 2024, news broke he's returning for a spinoff series on Paramount+. As Deadline announced, Michael and his former co-star Cote de Pablo (who portrayed DiNozzo's romantic partner Ziva David) will reunite on screen for the first time in a decade, with the two starring in and leading as executive producers for the upcoming show. The streamer gave the green light to the series for a 10-episode season.
Michael confirmed the news by sharing the story on X (formerly known as Twitter). "So β¦ that happened β¦" he captioned the post at the time.
Upon seeing the news, longtime viewers couldn't help but voice their excitement in the comments. "Beyond excited!! This is going to be awesome in all the ways! Thank you!!" one person exclaimed on X. What will NCIS: Tony & Ziva be about?
As for what to expect from this spinoff, an official press release from February 2024 revealed the show will follow Tony and Ziva as they raise their daughter in Paris. But as Tony's security company is under surprise attack, "they must go on the run across Europe, try to figure out who is after them and maybe even learn to trust each other again so that they can finally have their unconventional happily ever after."
It's also important to note this isn't the only new NCIS series based on an O.G. character. Back in January 2024, CBS announced the order of NCIS: Origins, which premiered in October 2024 and follows the life of Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon) in his first years as a special agent.
While it'll still be some time before folks get to see NCIS: Tony & Ziva air on Paramount+, we did get a sneak peek at what to expect from Cote and Michael. When the two attended the MIPCOM conference in Cannes, France in October 2024, Cote assured fans that we'll learn what happened since the pair last appeared together on NCIS.
"We haven't seen these characters since 2013 and I think the fans have always wanted to see what happened between them," she stated, per Deadline. "In our first season, they're going to get a fix of what has happened."
It's evident the pair are also thrilled to pick up with their characters after all this time away. "We've been talking about this story for many years, and now, with John McNamara at the helm, we are ready," the actors said in a joint statement, per Variety in February 2024. "The world of Tony and Ziva (and daughter Tali) promises to be an action-packed roller coaster fueled by love, danger, tears and laughter. We also want to acknowledge and thank the fans from around the world ... To this day, they say hello in grocery stores and on the street to tell us how much these characters mean to them and ask what Tony and Ziva are up to now."
