Rob Lowe is opening up about one of his late close friends, and he has nothing but fond memories to share about their friendship.
The Unstable actor had comedian Matt Rife on his Literally! With Rob Lowe podcast in August, where the two discussed comedy and life in the spotlight. At one point in the conversation, Matt expressed how he idolized Rob's late friend Patrick Swayze, who died in September 2009 from pancreatic cancer. Rob had starred alongside Patrick in
Youngblood and The Outsiders. When Rob heard how inspirational Patrick was on Matt's life, he reminisced about what made the acting icon so great.
"He was something," Rob wistfully explained about five minutes into the episode. "Patrick Swayze was a true renaissance man. I mean, he could do anything. He was an accomplished dancer, he was an accomplished archer, cutting horses, gymnast ... Before Tom Cruise was doing it, Swayze was doing it."
"Those two guys sort of cooking off against each other on The Outsiders set was pretty spectacular," he added. "They [were] both among the most competitive and ambitious people I've ever known."
As Rob and Matt continued their discussion about Patrick, The West Wing star talked about their time filming Youngblood. He revealed the story of how Patrick came up with the song "She's Like the Wind," which he tried to get Rob to listen to in between filming.
"[Patrick] kept trying to [say], 'I wrote this song last night,'" Rob recalled. "He never slept. He was up writing songs or working out. The man was like a vampire bat. He had this song 'She's Like the Wind' ... We're like, 'we're not putting this song in this hockey movie!'" And then a year and a half later, it's the No. 1 hit in the world from Dirty Dancing. There was nothing he couldn't do."
As movie-goers may remember, Patrick became a megastar from starring in Dirty Dancing, playing Johnny Castle alongside Jennifer Grey's Frances "Baby" Houseman. "She's Like the Wind" made it onto the movie's soundtrack, and the ballad quickly reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the Adult Contemporary Chart.
Needless to say, along with Rob, we all miss the incredible star.
