One of Star Wars' most recognizable faces is receiving a special accolade posthumously, and her former co-star Mark Hamill is supporting her more than half a century since first working together.
On April 24, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce announced that the late icon Carrie Fisher will receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame six years after her death. The actress' daughter Billie Lourd is set to accept the honor on her behalf on May 4 (a.k.a. Star Wars Day), and her plaque will be placed across the street from her mother Debbie Reynolds' print. What's more, the official press release announced that Carrie's star will join fellow Star Wars cast mates Mark and Harrison Ford for her contribution to the popular franchise.
Upon learning that Carrie's work in the acting industry would be permanently cemented just feet from his own place on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Mark reacted by celebrating his late co-star on Twitter. "Long overdue [and] so well-deserved. #CarrieOnForever ❤️," he wrote.
Reacting to the heartfelt news, Star Wars fans immediately shared their own words of excitement.
"I'm glad they are doing this for her. She'll always be a princess in my book," one person wrote on Twitter. "I can't like/love this comment enough ❤️," a different user raved. "My heart is full and happy and all of Carrie’s fans can be happy #CarrieOnForever," another follower commented.
As folks know, Mark and Carrie famously played siblings Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia Organa in the Star Wars franchise. When the pair wrapped up the movie franchise, they remained close friends for the rest of their careers. Now, this isn't the first time Mark has spoken out about the love he has for his onscreen partner.
A month after Carrie's death in December 2016, the actor penned a tribute to her in The Hollywood Reporter. "We ran the gamut over the years, where we were in love with each other, where we hated each other’s guts," he wrote in January 2017. "We went through it all. It’s like we were a family."
He concluded: "[Carrie] was a handful. She was high maintenance. But my life would have been so much drabber and less interesting if she hadn’t been the friend that she was."
