Previous GH+ Reads Picks:
Flores and Miss Paula by Melissa Rivero
Perdóname si te falle. Recuerda que siempre te quise.
“Forgive me if I failed you. Remember that I always loved you.”
When Flores finds a secret note from her mother, Paula, under her late father Martín's urn almost three years after his death, she wonders if there might have been more to her parents' relationship than she realized. But she and her mom don't exactly talk that way, and they've got bigger fish to fry.
Three years after losing their beloved patriarch, thirtysomething Flores and her mother, Paula, still live together in the same Brooklyn apartment. And like mothers and daughters so often do, they butt heads about just about everything: Why Flores should spend fewer evenings at the shaky startup where she works and more of them finding a man, why Paula needs to advocate for herself at the local shop where she works, her friendship with a married man she may or may not have feelings for (and vice versa) and what they're going to do about their impending eviction.
This is a story about love and loss, the meaning of family and the importance of community, passion and what happens when it's misdirected or lost entirely. It's one of those books where the characters quickly feel like friends, then family. You won't be able to put it down.
Midnight is the Darkest Hour by Ashley Winstead
Having grown up in Bottom Springs, LA, as the daughter of the town’s most beloved preacher, Ruth Cornier knows a little something about the community’s desperation for answers. She’s always been an outcast, her only friend the brooding Everett, who left town years ago only to return semiannually to break Ruth’s heart all over again. When a skull is uncovered in the nearby swamp, surrounded by strange symbols, the town believes it’s the mythical Low Man, a vampire-like creature said to haunt Bottom Springs.
But as Ruth and Everett get closer to the truth of what happened, they realize the demons they should really fear are flesh and blood, some of them at the highest levels of their society — and all of them more dangerous than any myth they could dream up. This is a well-woven tale of love and lust, dark impulses and darker deeds. Pro tip: Read this one with all the lights on, unless you never want to sleep again.
Good Night, Irene by Luis Alberto Urrea
Inspired by the author's mother, this gripping historical fiction introduces us to the Donut Dollies, Red Cross volunteers who served coffee and donuts on the front lines of WWII. Plucky farm girl Dorothy and former society doyenne Irene form an unlikely friendship as they try to keep the boys’ spirits up in impossibly grim circumstances. They get involved in lots of scrapes and hijinks, of course, and even find love along the way. Fans of period dramas, WWII history buffs and anyone who loves a good story full of breathtaking adventures and female friendship (not to mention one heck of a twist at the end) shouldn't miss this one.
Secretly Yours by Tessa Bailey
Hallie Welch fell in love with Julian Vos in high school, when he almost kissed her at his family's vineyard. Years later, he returns to their small Napa town to write a novel, and she's hired to landscape his family's property. But their opposite personalities clash despite Hallie's still-burning crush. Hijinks ensue when she decides to leave him a "secret admirer" note in the latest entry from this romance queen.
