Ozark fans are counting down the days until the last seven episodes premiere. But there is already a disagreement about what might happen next.
Ahead of the crime drama returning to Netflix on April 29, the streamer released a new trailer for Ozark season 4 part 2, in which fans see a preview of what’s to come … or maybe not. In the two-minute clip, Marty (Jason Bateman) and Wendy (Laura Linney) are at a standstill about their next step. Inevitably, Ruth (Julia Garner) comes up, and the Byrde patriarch feels for her after the brutal murder of her cousin Wyatt (Charlie Tahan). Still, Marty is seen giving Ruth a stern warning to not let her desire for revenge take precedence over the criminal empire they’ve built.
“If Javi dies, everything that we worked for just falls apart,” he says in the clip below, referring to the Navarro Cartel member. “Welcome to my f-----g world,” she replies. With that, the video cuts to black and Ruth is seen marching toward Javi (Alfonso Herrera) before shooting him twice with a concealed gun.
Unsurprisingly, Ozark fans had many thoughts about the heart-pumping scenes alluding to the Byrde criminal operations potentially crumbling after one unexpected move. That said, not everyone was on the same page about Ruth actually shooting Javi.
“That was a major spoiler. 😂,” one person wrote on YouTube. Other viewers immediately rebutted with a different theory. “There's been a lot of dream sequences lol. Remember Wendy shooting Marty?” a different fan said. “Yeah I suspect that wasn't real. Either a dream sequence, or, maybe he survives somehow,” another added.
On the other hand, some folks stood firm in their belief that Ruth changed the course of Marty and his family with an emotionally charged decision. “I don’t [think] it’s a dream. Since Marty went to Mexico to set things under control that cannot be dream and it means Javi is dead,” a follower commented. “Everything else that followed that in the trailer suggests that it’s NOT a dream lol,” another said.
As of right now it’s not clear if Ruth went through with her plan but she may have foreshadowed it in a previous Ozark teaser. "My childhood traumas are not like yours. You see, I'm a cursed Langmore," she said in the snippet. "Long inured to violence and death. In the case of a Langmore, perhaps not soon enough."
If Javi is dead though, it might fall in line with what Ozark showrunner Chris Mundy has said in the past about the Netflix series. "There’s a feeling on our show all the time where anything can happen at anytime, and I like that unease,” he told TVLine in February.
Luckily, he won’t make fans wait too long to see how things shake out. “We pick up right away,” he told the outlet. “We would be cheating everybody if we jumped past the emotional place we were in [at the end of episode 7].”
