These days, it seems more and more companies are closing locations across the country. From pharmacies to convenience stores to clothing shops and more, the list of shutterings only seems to grow. This time, the economic indicator is extending to a new space: grocery as Kroger announces store closure plans.
Why is Kroger closing stores?
One of the largest grocery store chains in the country, Kroger, released a statement on June 20, where it shared plans to close approximately 60 stores over the next 18 months.
Like many others, the decision comes down to sales. The brand expects to see a "a modest financial benefit" by closing 60 locations, according to their Q1 Earnings Release. These closures account for less than 5% of their total repertoire of 1,239 locations, meaning they are but a drop in a pond.
However, for employees and certain communities, these closures could have a big impact. Though, the company states, "Kroger will offer roles in other stores to all associates currently employed at affected stores."
Additionally, the grocery giant says it intend to reinvest the savings from store closures back into Kroger and "the customer experience," assuring shoppers that this change was made for the better.
