Every plant pro knows that a reliable watering can is a must-have gardening tool, providing a much-needed source of life for outdoor gardens and indoor plants alike. While garden hoses are best-suited for covering large outdoor areas, like lawns and shrubbery, watering cans and plant misters are ideal for houseplants, vertical gardens and other spots in your yard that need a more precise amount of H20.

If you're buying a watering can for the first time — or you're looking to upgrade to a better design — you'll want to consider a few important factors, like whether you'll be using it indoors or outdoors, what type of plants you'll be watering and, of course, your budget. You'll also want a can that's easy to fill with water and that's durable. To find the best watering cans for every type of gardener, we considered style, price point, capacity, ease of use and materials in our research.

How to clean a watering can

    linebreak

Knowing how to clean your garden tools is one of the most important parts of being a gardener. Here are a few tips to make the process of cleaning your watering can easier:

    • Remove any water left in the can after each use. At some point, you might have left water sitting in your can over a long period of time. This can lead to the production of bacteria. To avoid this, pour out the water after each use and start fresh every time.
    • Use a DIY cleaning solution. Fill the watering can with a mix of distilled white vinegar and warm water. Wait two to 10 minutes while swishing the solution around before pouring out. If your can is especially dirty, try leaving the vinegar and water solution in the can to soak overnight.
    • Scrub the watering can with a brush before rinsing it off with water. Hang it upside down to dry before using again.
