Remove hardware and take out any drawers. Clean dirt from surface by sponging with soap and water; let dry.

Sand in a circular motion with medium-grit paper to remove any existing paint or stain and smooth out the surface. (Do this over a floor covered with newsprint.) Sweep off dust and wipe with a clean, damp cloth.

Prime

Primer blocks old color and creates a new surface for your paint to stick to. Check the paint you’ll be using for its primer recommendations. Use painter’s tape to protect any areas you don’t want to paint. In a well-ventilated spot — a covered outdoor area is best — lay a canvas drop cloth on the floor, then apply primer, giving it plenty of time to dry, anywhere from 30 minutes to 4 hours.

Apply paint in thin layers and give each one time to dry completely. You’ll need to apply at least two coats of paint — more for warm colors like reds and oranges. Wait at least 72 hours for the paint to cure before replacing drawers, attaching knobs or placing anything on the surface of your piece.
