After hopping out of a steamy shower, no one wants to dry off with an old, scratchy towel with fraying threads. If that sounds like your towels, it may be time for an upgrade — a plush and cozy bath towel can totally change your bath-time experience. Luckily, you don't have to wait long for your brand-new towels: The best towels on Amazon can arrive at your door quickly with free Prime shipping.

In the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab, we test all sorts of towels, including kitchen towels, beach towels and quick-dry towels to determine which ones are worth buying. In recent years, we've tested over 80 towels for properties such as absorbency, dry time, washability, strength and more using our Lab equipment. We also enlist consumer testers to try out the towels in their homes, rating characteristics such as softness, appearance and absorbency. I used this testing information, my categorical expertise and reviews from online users when making picks for the best bath towels you can buy on Amazon.

Pros

  • Proved quick-drying in our tests
  • Unique construction combines cotton and microfiber
  • Soft and cozy feel

Cons

  • Sheds fuzzy fibers in the wash

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Our top pick is the best option on Amazon for soft, high-quality towels at a reasonable price.

WHY WE LOVE IT: Everplush's popular jacquard bath towel is both fast drying and absorbent, thanks to its unique construction. It has plush and absorbent cotton fibers on the surface and soft, quick-dry microfiber on the inside. When we evaluated the towel in the Textiles Lab, it outperformed more than 40 other towels in terms of its speedy drying time. During our wash tests, the material showed more signs of wear and produced more lint and fuzz than other towels, which can be attributed to the blended material. However, our testers noted that it maintained its appearance and looked great after several wash cycles.

Testers and GH analysts also noted that the towel was cozy, and our testers and I were impressed that the towel looked so high-end, despite its more affordable price tag. One tester shared, "The towel feels really soft, comfortable and smooth on your skin." And Amazon reviewers agreed, with one who said, "I have never used such a luxurious towel in my life," further adding that the towels "are incredibly soft, absorbent and dry much faster than other brands."

Amazon Basics Quick-Dry Bath Towels, 2-Pack

Pros

  • Inexpensive
  • Super soft

Cons

  • Some testers thought it felt too lightweight

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Anyone on a budget can still experience luxurious towels at an affordable price.

WHY WE LOVE IT: For under $20, this two-pack of towels is our favorite budget-friendly pick in our comprehensive list of the best bath towels. "It feels lightweight — it's thinner and less dense than other towels — yet it is still super soft," said Lexie Sachs, our executive director of strategy and operations. Sachs used this towel at home and was impressed by how it felt, much more expensive than its price would suggest.

In our Lab tests, we found that the towel was incredibly soft; however, it wasn't as absorbent and exhibited some shrinkage after laundering. Nevertheless, it maintained its softness over time. Its performance was comparable to towels triple the price and testers loved the softness of the towel after showering. Some testers did not appreciate the lightweight feel of the towel, especially those who prefer heavy-duty, thick towels.

Pros

  • Online reviewers said the towels are absorbent
  • 100% Turkish cotton fibers
  • Online reviewers loved the soft feel

Cons

  • Some reviewers said the towels are thin

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Those who prefer the feel of 100% Turkish cotton and super plush materials will like these reasonably priced towels.

They've wowed consumers with more than 48,000 Amazon reviewers who gave the towels five stars for their cozy feel and impressive absorbency. One reviewer shared that the towels were "softer than expected," and another said, "These towels are incredibly soft, plush and absorbent, providing a spa-like experience every time I use them."

I love that the towels are made from 100% Turkish cotton, which is a higher-quality, longer cotton fiber that tends to have a softer feel than shorter-staple cotton. Some reviewers expressed disappointment that the towels were thin and not as fluffy and full as they appeared in the online pictures, but others noted that the towels fluffed up in the wash.

Brooklinen Super-Plush Bath Towels

Pros

  • Extra plush, thick feel
  • Proved very absorbent in our Lab tests
  • Testers gave high ratings for softness

Cons

  • Longer dry time

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: These ultra-thick towels are ideal if you want something snug and warm.

WHY WE LOVE IT: At 820 GSM, these towels from Brooklinen are heavier weight than any of our other picks. The luxurious 100% Turkish cotton towels are dense and "almost feel like a blanket," according to one tester. They excelled in our Textiles Lab evaluations for absorbency and were unanimously rated as soft by our consumer testers. I personally use these seriously cozy towels and can't get enough of them. One Amazon reviewer described the towels as "a joy to use," and another called them "the best towels I've bought."

When we washed the towels in the Textiles Lab, we were impressed by how few fibers they shed, given that they're so plush. The trade-off: The hefty towels took longer to dry than some others, and one tester noted, "It's important to hang the towels up properly without bunching or folding the material because you might end up with wet spots."

Brooklinen offers a variety of neutral shades on its Amazon storefront, but the brand's site features bolder color options and striped styles.

Pros

  • Eight total pieces
  • Online reviewers said they're soft and absorbent
  • 22 colors to choose from

Cons

  • Some online reviews mentioned fraying threads after washing

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: If you moved recently or want to replace all your bath towels, hand towels and washcloths at once, this set comes at a great price.

WHY WE LOVE IT: I've found that most towel sets tend to come with six pieces, but this set from Utopia Towels on Amazon includes two standard bath towels, two hand towels and four washcloths — and all eight pieces are less than $40 on sale. Over 48,000 five-star Amazon reviews highlight the towel set's absorbency, quality and vibrant coloring, with some reviewers saying they're a great starter towel set for a young person moving into a new apartment or for anyone shopping on a budget.

One online reviewer shared that she has paid much more for towels that weren't as comfortable or absorbent. Another said, "The towels are not only super soft and plush, but they also dry quickly." Some users experienced fraying threads and unraveling seams with repeated use and regular washing, so they may not be as long-lasting as other picks, but I still think they're a great value for the price. And with 22 shades to choose from, including everyday neutrals and fashion colors, there's bound to be a towel set to coordinate with your bathroom decor.

How we choose the best bath towels on Amazon

good housekeeping institute beauty lab eye makeup remover testing

At the Good Housekeeping Institute, we test towels, including beach towels, kitchen towels and bath towels in our Textiles Lab and share them with our consumer testers. In recent years, we've tested more than 80 towels from popular brands. When we evaluate towels, here are some characteristics that we analyze:

✔️ Washability: In the Lab, we wash each towel 20 times, measuring shrinkage and rating changes in appearance with each wash. We also weigh the towels to evaluate how much the towels have linted (shed fibers).

✔️ Drying speed: To calculate drying speed, we pour a standard amount of water on a towel swatch. Then, the towel is hung to dry and weighed every 30 minutes until it returns to its initial weight, indicating that it has fully dried.

lab analyst holding a test tube of water to pour onto a towel set up at an angle over a metal pan for absorbency tests, towels are stacked in the background
Mike Garten

✔️ Absorbency: We set up a towel at a 60-degree angle and then pour water from a standard distance onto the towel (pictured). Any water that isn't absorbed by the towel rolls off and into a tray below, which is weighed. This process is repeated throughout the laundering cycles to account for absorbency changes after washing. The runoff water helps us to calculate absorbency levels, and a towel with excellent absorbency will soak up all water with no runoff in the tray.

✔️ Fabric strength: We use our Instron machine, which pulls towel fabric swatches apart and measures the force needed to rip each swatch.

✔️ Consumer tests: Lastly, we share towels with dozens of consumer testers who actually use the towels in their homes and rate them on factors such as appearance, dry time and softness.

What to look for when shopping for the best bath towels on Amazon

"

When shopping for bath towels on Amazon, consider what type of towel you're looking for: absorbent or quick-drying.

✔️ Absorbent towels: Towels made of 100% cotton fibers, especially longer staple cottons like Turkish cotton, are very absorbent and will help you to dry off quickly. A denser towel has more loops of yarn on the surface and will be more absorbent as a result. You can also consider GSM, which is the weight of the towel. A towel with a weight of over 600 GSM is a heavier weight, and these towels will likely be more absorbent and plush. A lower GSM towel will be lighter weight and may not feel as soft or absorb as much moisture.

✔️ Quick-dry towels: If you're looking for a low-maintenance towel that dries quickly, consider a cotton and polyester blend towel or a cotton towel with a shorter yarn loop (lower pile). Polyester fibers are inherently hydrophobic, meaning they don't absorb moisture, and lower pile loops have a reduced capacity for absorption. A towel with either of those features will be less absorbent but will dry more quickly and may prove to be more durable in the long term.
