A deck box can do a lot more than just hide away cushions. The right one keeps your outdoor space organized, protects gear from the weather, and can even pull double duty as a bench or side table. Whether you're storing garden tools, pool floats, or covers for your patio set, a well-built deck box helps keep everything in one place and out of sight.

At the Good Housekeeping Institute, we’ve spent years testing outdoor gear, from patio furniture to pressure washers. We know what holds up in the elements and what starts to fall apart after a season. When it comes to deck boxes, we look at weather resistance, build quality, ease of assembly and overall value.

This list includes a range of styles and sizes, from compact options for tight spaces to oversized models that can hold bulky cushions and more. Some double as extra seating, while others are designed to blend in neatly against a wall or fence. All of the picks here come from brands we trust, and they’re selected with real-world use in mind.

Best Overall

Keter DecoCoat Walnut Resin Deck Box

Pros

  • Attractive wood-like aesthetic
  • Soft-close lid enhances safety

Cons

  • Assembly can be time-consuming due to size and components

Capacity: 150 gallons | Material: resin | Dimensions: 59.6"W x 28.5"D x 27.7"H

With a generous 150-gallon capacity, this Keter deck box has enough room to store large patio cushions, pool accessories and gardening tools. With its wood-like appearance, it's also stylish enough to take up a prominent section of your yard.

Constructed from weather-resistant resin, this deck box is designed for all types of outdoor conditions and should resist fading and warping. The lid on deck boxes of this size can be heavy, so we appreciate the easy lift and soft-close mechanism, which pulls the top completely open and shuts it slowly with minimal effort.

Assembly is required and may take some time due to the box's size and components. However, the end result is a sturdy and functional storage unit that blends well with outdoor decor.

Best Value

Rubbermaid XL Resin Deck Box

Pros

  • Straightforward snap-together assembly
  • Lockable lid adds security

Cons

  • Durability could be an issue

Capacity: 134 gallons | Material: resin | Dimensions: 55.5"W x 27.5"D x 26.75"H

If you’re looking for a no-nonsense storage solution that can take a beating, the Rubbermaid 134-Gallon Deck Box is one of the toughest options available. Its double-wall resin design resists leaks, dents, fading and cracking, making it well suited for year-round exposure on patios, decks or pool areas. With 134 gallons of internal space, it easily holds large patio cushions, garden supplies and pool floats.

Our tester found the assembly process similar to Rubbermaid's storage sheds, with walls that fold at the corners and securely slot into the base. Over a few months, the front section has warped a bit, which is out of character for other Rubbermaid products we've tested, but otherwise the unit has held up well and looks new.

The lid can be secured with your own padlock, and although it isn't rated for seating, it's flat and sturdy enough to double as a temporary work surface. It's not the most stylish deck box, but it will get the job done.

Best Wood Deck Box

Cambridge Casual Teak Wood Deck Box

Teak Wood Deck Box

Pros

  • High-quality teak wood resists weather and ages beautifully
  • Aesthetic upgrade compared to standard plastic models

Cons

  • Not lockable or designed for seating

Capacity: 48 gallons | Material: Indonesian teak wood | Dimensions: 48"L x 23.5"W x 39.5"H

Crafted from Indonesian teak, this 48-gallon box brings a warm, natural look to patios, porches or poolside areas. Teak is well-known for its durability and weather resistance, and this model is designed to be left outdoors year-round. Over time, it can weather to a soft silver-gray patina, or you can apply teak oil to maintain its golden hue.

Unlike resin deck boxes that prioritize utility, this box adds polish and presence to an outdoor setting. It still has some of the same features we love in our other deck boxes, like soft-close hydraulic hinges and slatted gaps that promote air circulation and drainage.

This box doesn’t lock, and it’s not meant for sitting, but it offers reliable, attractive storage for towels, pool supplies or gardening tools. If you're seeking an alternative to the commonplace resin boxes, start with this beauty.

4
Best Lid Design

Suncast All-Weather Patio Deck Box

All-Weather Patio Deck Box

Pros

  • Split-lid design offers convenient, partial access
  • 250 lb. lid capacity allows for seating or stacking

Cons

  • No interior compartments for organizing smaller items

Capacity: 120 gallons | Material: resin | Dimensions: 33.15"W x 12.84"D x 27.23"H

At first glance, the Suncast looks a bit boring, but the sleek, modern design fits well with most patio or backyard setups, while the black and gray finish offers a contemporary look. But its real standout feature is the split top lid, which makes it easy to open one side without lifting the full lid, a useful detail when space is tight or you're reaching for frequently used items.

The multi-wall resin panels offer resistance to both UV exposure and water, making this deck box a solid choice for year-round use. The lids are supported by shock springs for smooth opening and closing, and they stay open during use, which helps when you're unloading heavy or awkward gear. The 120-gallon interior is roomy enough for large cushions, yard tools and pool supplies.

A deck box this long could use some removable interior dividers to help organize the space, because like most of these deck boxes, it can quickly become a mess.

Best Compact Deck Box

Lifetime Storage Cube Deck Box

Storage Cube Deck Box

Pros

  • Lightweight and easy to move with built-in handles
  • Detachable lid makes access and cleaning easy

Cons

  • Limited capacity not suitable for large cushions or gear

Capacity: 25 gallons | Material: polyethylene (HDPE) | Dimensions: 20.1"L x 20.1"W x 20"H

This 25-gallon storage cube is "cute" compared to the other monstrous deck boxes listed here. It's perfect for balconies and small outdoor patios as it can double as a side table or stool without taking up extra space.

Built from weather-resistant high-density polyethylene with a rigid double-wall structure, it’s designed to resist cracking, fading and peeling, even after years in direct sun. At eight pounds, this deck box can be easily moved around the yard, and the detachable lid is a small but smart detail, allowing for quick access and a snug closure without hinges getting in the way.

You'd be surprised how many garden tools, gloves and accessories you can fit into this cube, but you'll need to find a different place for pillows and other decor.

6
Best Seat Deck Box

Winado Metal Deck Box and Seat

Metal Deck Box and Seat

Pros

  • Iron frame improves stability and weight capacity
  • Can double as bench seating or a small table

Cons

  • Not waterproof or lockable

Capacity: 33 gallons | Material: PVC wicker with metal frame | Dimensions: 41.7"L x 17.7"W x 20.5"H

This unique-looking deck box combines polyethylene wicker appearance with the strength of an internal metal frame. You can have the look of outdoor furniture with the utility of a storage box, making it a smart choice for patios where appearance matters as much as function. At just over 33 gallons, it’s best for holding small to mid-size items like cushions, garden supplies or even pool towels.

The frame is made of powder-coated iron, which helps improve stability and resistance to rust over time. Despite its lightweight build (just over 21 pounds), it’s sturdy enough to support up to 220 pounds of static weight, so you can use the flat top as occasional seating or a side table. The woven PVC exterior adds texture and visual appeal but is still weather-resistant and low-maintenance.

One trade-off to note is that it’s not lockable and doesn’t have a gasketed lid, so it may not be fully waterproof in heavy storms. For covered patios or partially sheltered outdoor spaces, it’s a well-priced, versatile pick that complements a more refined outdoor aesthetic.

How we chose deck boxes

double line break

To compile this list, we analyzed product specs and owner feedback across top retailers, as well as the results from our field of at-home testers. We looked closely at storage capacity, build materials, weather resistance and functional extras like hydraulic hinges, lockable lids and assembly time. We also considered manufacturer claims about weight capacity and waterproofing, and cross-referenced those with long-term owner comments to determine which boxes truly deliver on durability.

When possible, we gave preference to brands with a proven track record in outdoor goods, including those we’ve tested in other areas, and favored products with standout design (like the split lid) or utility. Whether it’s a compact box that doubles as a side table or a large-capacity model that anchors a patio, each of these picks was chosen with real homeowners and backyard storage needs in mind.

What to look for when shopping for the best deck box

double line break

Buying a deck box may seem straightforward, but the right model can make a big difference in how well your outdoor space functions. Here are the key factors to keep in mind before you buy:

✔️ Capacity: Deck boxes typically range from 25 to 200 gallons. Smaller boxes (under 50 gallons) are best for toys, grill tools or garden gloves. Mid-size options (50 to 100 gallons) can fit seat cushions and pool gear, while larger boxes (over 100 gallons) are ideal for bulky items like chaise cushions or yard equipment.

✔️ Material: Most deck boxes are made from weather-resistant resin or high-density polyethylene (HDPE), which resist cracking, fading and rust. Wood models, like teak, offer a more premium look and can last for years with proper care, while metal-framed options provide added strength but may require extra maintenance.

✔️ Lid Design: Look for features like soft-close hydraulic hinges, split lids for easy access, or lockable tops if you plan to store valuables or tools. Flat-top lids that support weight can double as benches or tabletops.

✔️ Assembly and Portability: Some boxes snap together in minutes with no tools, while others require full assembly. Built-in handles and lightweight construction make it easier to reposition as needed, especially for seasonal storage.
