If I had to recommend just one hybrid mattress, it would be the Bear Elite Hybrid. It’s great for those who are accustomed to the traditional feel of an innerspring mattress but want to try memory foam. Few mattresses we’ve tested offer this level of comfort and support — Bear was one of the first brands to use a zoned layout, providing extra give in key areas to help maintain proper spinal alignment.
How it performed in our tests:
✔️ Comfort & sleep quality: It earned perfect comfort and sleep quality ratings from all of our consumer testers. Several shared that their sleep quality has noticeably improved: They have better, more uninterrupted sleep than on any other mattress they tried before. How it performed in our tests:
✔️ Excellent support: When reviewing surveys from 150 Stearns & Foster mattress owners, support stood out above all else. One tester called his first month on the mattress a "revelation" and commented, "I love how firm and structured the mattress felt. I've been sleeping much more soundly."
✔️ Sleep quality: While this brand has a higher price point than our other picks, our panelists told us it was worth the splurge. Users told us that their sleep quality noticeably improved from the very first night.

Serta's Perfect Sleeper Hybrid is a popular choice amongst our panelists for its no-frills comfort and price point (under $1,000 for a Queen and under $1,500 for a King). It's received good feedback from many users, but they're divided on longevity, with some noting that it didn't hold up as well as they wanted over the years.

Sleep Number's p6 Smart Bed is good for couples who disagree on firmness but comes at a steep price tag. It's our favorite smart bed, as no other adjustable mattress has the level of precise firmness control, but it's a bit more specialized.
DLX Premier Hybrid: We're currently in the process of testing this popular hybrid. So far, we like its customizability: You can choose different firmness levels for each half of the bed at no extra cost.
DreamCloud Hybrid Mattress: We've had mixed reviews for this brand. While many found this model (the brand's original mattress) initially comfortable and dreamy, they noticed sagging earlier than expected. Testers also agreed that it ran a bit too warm.
Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe: This is another popular cooling mattress. It's not as cooling as ones from Purple, but it's less expensive and it's a solid option for those who like the plush texture of memory foam. Note that it runs slightly soft.
Leesa Sapira Hybrid / Leesa Original Hybrid: In our surveys, Leesa's hybrid mattresses received mixed reviews for long-term durability. Some swore by the brand for its soft, cushy foam, but others have reported issues with repeated sagging. I find that the Original Hybrid has a balanced, uniform feel, making it more versatile, while the Sapira Hybrid is best suited to those who love plush memory foam.
The Winkbed: This is another popular hybrid mattress, but it's received mixed reviews in our surveys and tests. Our most recent tester found the support solid and uniform but noted that it slept notably hot and ran firm, ultimately aggravating her shoulder and lower back over time.

✔️ Certifications: It's important to know the difference between the various emblems you see when you shop since they often get mistaken for meaning the mattress is natural or organic. Here's a breakdown of the most common certifications:
- CertiPUR-US: This certifies whether any foam in the mattress is made without certain harmful chemicals and has been tested for low VOC emissions.
- OEKO-TEX: The Standard 100 by Oeko-TEX shows whether any fabric (like the outer cover) has been tested to ensure there are no unsafe levels of known harmful chemicals.
- GOTS: The Global Organic Textile Standard shows that the mattress follows strict standards throughout the entire production process. This is the gold standard when it comes to picking out an organic mattress made of natural materials. Just be aware that this certification is commonly misused by brands who use just one organic component (e.g., an organic cotton outer cover), so you can always check the GOTS public database to be sure.
- GOLS: The Global Organic Latex Standard is similar to GOTS, but it shows that any latex is certified organic. You'll often see these two organic certifications used together.
How much should I pay for a good King-size mattress?
In our tests, we've found that a good mattress typically costs between $1,200 to $2,500 for a King size. That being said, you can still find great, affordable mattresses well under $1,000, and there are also luxury mattresses that prove worth the splurge.
Still, we've seen mattress prices steadily increase in recent years, and we expect them to continue rising.
What's the difference between King, California King and Split King?
A King-size mattress is 76" x 80". In comparison, a California King is less wide but longer at 72" x 84", making it great for taller individuals. A Split King mattress is the same size as a King but instead of one mattress, it's comprised of two Twin-XL-size mattresses, which fit in a King-size bed frame.
The Split King size is most popular for using on a Split King adjustable base but also good for couples with different firmness preferences or those who want true motion isolation.
