    Credit: mike garten

    Pros

    • Comfortable and firm support
    • Good motion isolation
    • Under $1,000

    Cons

    • Lacks edge support

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Thanks to its responsive support, this all-foam mattress works for every sleeping position, but it's best suited for back and stomach sleepers.

WHO SHOULD AVOID IT: Those who struggle to get in and out of bed may sink in when sitting on the side of this mattress that lacks edge support.

HOW IT PERFORMED IN OUR TESTS:

✔️ Foam with firm support: This mattress from Tuft & Needle takes the highest spot on our list for its cushioning memory foam and firm support. It's made of two layers of the brand's proprietary T&N Adaptive Foam technology, which the brand highlights as being supportive and resilient while still contouring to your body without any stiffness. Several users loved the overall firmness with one long-term user calling it "more comfortable than any mattress I've ever had in the past" and other users reported less back pain.

✔️ Temperature control: The foam layers are infused with graphite and ceramic gel, which help pull away any excess body heat to combat the memory foam's propensity for overheating. (If your primary concern is regulating body temperature while sleeping, continue reading as we have other picks better at cooling.)

✔️ Stellar trial period and customer service: Tuft & Needle has worked with Amazon to honor their 100-night trial regardless of whether you buy off the T&N site or an Amazon listing.

✔️ Motion isolation: Users noted that the mattress had better motion isolation than other mattresses they've owned, ensuring that they couldn't feel movement from sleeping partners.

    Best Value

    Novilla Bliss Mattress

    Bliss Mattress

    Pros

    • All-foam design is ideal for side sleepers
    • Soft and plush feel
    • Low price for high quality
    • Users said it was easy to set up

    Cons

    • Some users reported the mattress did not expand to its full height

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Side sleepers and fans of soft mattresses will like the extra plush foam in this model.

WHO SHOULD AVOID IT: Hot sleepers may feel too warm sleeping on this all-foam mattress and those who prefer a firm feel will not enjoy this extra-soft model.

HOW IT PERFORMED IN OUR TESTS:

✔️ Great bang for your buck: At less than $500, the Novilla Bliss Mattress was rated as a great value pick among the softest mattresses. Several users highlighted the price point and said it was an excellent value for its quality.

✔️ Soft foam: With multiple layers of foam, this mattress is soft, plushy and relieves pressure. "A bit soft but still firm enough that I don’t feel sucked in by the foam," one tester shared. Another said it "feels like a soft hug." Go for the 12-inch height if you are looking for the softest option (the 6-, 8- and 10-inch models won't feel as plush because there is less foam).

✔️ Comforting for side sleepers: "The all-foam design cradles your hips and shoulders, which is great for side sleepers," says Textiles Lab Analyst Grace Wu. This also provides excellent motion isolation.

✔️ Easy setup: Users appreciated how easy it was to set up this lightweight mattress, although some people said the mattress did not expand to its full height.

    Cool Gel Memory Foam Mattress

    Credit: Classic Brands

    Pros

    • Gel-infused memory foam to pull away heat
    • Open-cell foam structure for breathability
    • Less expensive than most cooling options

    Cons

    • The corners didn't fully take shape in our review

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Hot sleepers in search of a mattress that won't make them overheat at night — but still has that memory-foam feel — should take a look at this option from Cool Gel.

WHO SHOULD AVOID IT: This pick may not fit the bill if you're looking for something that feels extra luxurious or fully takes shape quickly after opening it.

HOW IT PERFORMED IN OUR TESTS:

✔️Affordability: This mattress is offered at a fraction of the cost of our other top-tested cooling mattresses.

✔️ Impressive cooling abilities: The top layer features gel-infused memory foam to draw heat away from your body with an open-cell structure for added breathability. Several users called the mattress "comfortable" and said it didn't cause any overheating compared to other memory foam mattresses they've tried.

✔️ Responsive foam: Unlike some foam mattresses, this one is a bit more responsive while continuing to contour and conform to your body so that you can sleep comfortably and maintain an ideal body temperature. One user even reported less back pain. However, the corners didn't fully take shape in our evaluations.

Zinus Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress

    Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress
Credit: Good Housekeeping / Grace Wu

    Pros

    • Comfortable, cushioning memory foam
    • Number-one best-seller on Amazon
    • Great motion isolation

    Cons

    • Lacks edge support

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: This mattress is great for someone who loves the cradling feeling of memory foam. It’s also ideal in that there’s a good number of height options for someone who may need a lower profile bed for an adjustable base, a trundle bed or a Murphy bed.

WHO SHOULD AVOID IT: Similar to the T&N mattress, this pick does not have the best edge support, so it's not a good fit for those who need a sturdy edge to sit on when getting in and out of bed.

Additionally, the brand makes claims about having a green tea infusion to keep the mattress fresh and charcoal to absorb moisture, but we couldn't validate these in our evaluations. However, we still recommend the mattress for its comfort. And while we didn't notice it in our review, some owners also told us the initial smell can take a while to dissipate.

HOW IT PERFORMED IN OUR TESTS:

✔️ Popularity: Zinus is the most popular mattress brand on Amazon with hundreds of thousands of five-star ratings for their Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress, the number-one best-selling mattress on Amazon.

✔️ Comfortable cushioning: Over 240 members of our tester panel own a Zinus mattress, with the Green Tea Memory Foam option being the most popular model. The brand overall received mixed feedback, but a majority of users loved the cushioning feel of this model, with many praising how "comfortable" it felt. Many of our consumer testers also said the mattress contours to their bodies and offers good support but noted that it may not offer pain relief for every user.

✔️ Plush, yet firm foam: This model is made of three layers of foam including a plush foam on top with a more supportive foam on the bottom. It slowly sinks in around you for an ultra-conforming feel, but still has some firm support underneath. Many users appreciated the great motion isolation and the medium-firm feel, with one user calling it "not too hard and not too soft."

Note: The mattress is offered in heights from 5 to 12 inches, each with different weight capacities, so you can choose between a high or low profile bed.

    Best for back pain

    Mattress

    Mattress
    Credit: mike garten

    Pros

    • Pressure-relieving support
    • Comfortable in multiple sleep positions
    • Excellent motion isolation and breathability

    Cons

    • The 9.25-in. profile may feel too low for some people
    • Difficult to set up, according to our survey panelists

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: This is a great cooling mattress for those looking for both pressure relief with ample support due to the polymer grid layer on top of the mattress.

WHO SHOULD AVOID IT: Those who prefer a traditional mattress may find the squishy texture of the Purple Mattress a bit odd to sleep on, but no one in our surveys had complaints about it. This mattress also has a height of 9.25 inches, which is much lower than most mattresses, so it's not the best for someone who prefers their bed to be thick and high up.

HOW IT PERFORMED IN OUR TESTS:

✔️ Unique design and materials: While most mattresses use memory foam, latex or coils, Purple's mattresses stand out for its unique GelFlex Grid material, a polymer-based grid-like elastic top layer that feels squishy yet surprisingly firm.

✔️ Pain relief: This mattress offers a balance of support, pressure relief and spinal alignment. Our panelists told us this mattress eliminated pressure points but still felt very responsive, so it was easy to switch positions or get up from bed.

✔️ Soft yet firm: Our panelists told us this mattress is the perfect combination of soft and firm. One user described sleeping on the mattress as "floating in every sleeping position" and compared it to "sleeping on air."

✔️ Exceptional motional isolation: Users also highlighted the exceptional motion isolation when sleeping with partners who moved in the bed.

✔️ Great breathability: Thanks to the GelFlex Grid material, users reported that the mattress was noticeably more breathable than other beds they've slept on.

✔️ Height: Our survey panelists told us this mattress was cumbersome when setting up, moving or putting on sheets since the GelFlex Grid layer is heavy. It's also very floppy and lacks rigidity, which makes it hard to maneuver, and the mattress doesn’t have handles on the side to help.

Other mattresses on Amazon we recommend

    double line break
    • Casper Original Mattress: This mattress is getting discontinued and we are currently testing the One model which is cheaper and doesn't have zoned support. However, the Original model is an excellent mattress and you can still buy it on Amazon in every size at the time of writing. There aren't many all-foam mattresses that offered zoned support (e.g. the lumbar region is designed to feel more supportive than the head or foot to promote spinal alignment), so it's worth buying while you still can.
    • Happsy Organic Mattress: If you prefer sleeping on natural or organic materials rather than synthetic, this mattress from Happsy more than fits the bill. It's certified by the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) and Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), so you can trust that the entire manufacturing process adheres to strict standards. Because of the dense latex used (compared to memory foam), the mattress itself can feel more firm than our other picks, though it won't be firm enough for stomach sleepers or those with larger frames who need extra support.

How we test the best mattresses on Amazon

    linebreak

The Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab evaluates all sorts of mattresses and begins by researching offerings from top brands, assessing the materials, specifications, specific features and claims of each mattress. Our analysts then work with product experts and consumer testers to collect firsthand feedback based on setup and sleep testing — once after several weeks and again after longer periods of time.

In addition, we frequently survey Good Housekeeping readers and our tester panel for in-depth feedback on the mattresses they own. We analyzed more than 170,000 data points from our recent surveys alone to make these choices.

✔️ Ordering and delivery: When we evaluate the best mattresses on Amazon, we first poll our panel on ordering and delivery. Mattresses on Amazon are typically shipped directly to your home for DIY setup, rather than delivered with in-home setup. Users tell us how easy the mattress was to order and how quickly it arrived. They also have the chance to share any potential problems that came up in this process and explain if those issues were resolved.

✔️ Ease of setup: When the mattress arrives, our consumer testers and experts provide qualitative and quantitative feedback on the ease of setup, observing any pull tabs or instructions from the brand on how to safely expand the rolled up, compressed mattress. They also weigh in on how long it took the mattress to take proper shape once unwrapped compared to each brand's instructions (some mattresses can be slept on immediately, while others may require a longer expansion period).

✔️ Comfort: Our panel provides feedback on the mattress's comfort, including firmness level (our analysts compare this feedback to claims from the brands), edge support, comfort and support, as well as how well they personally liked sleeping on them, both initially and over an extended period. We also ask reviewers to rate how comfortable their body temperature remained while sleeping on the mattress.

✔️ Sleep quality: Final scores are based on how the mattress impacted sleep quality and whether or not users woke up feeling sore over time. Our respondents then give the mattress an overall satisfaction score and compare the mattress to any previous beds they've slept on, plus any specific likes, dislikes and additional comments concerning their user experience.

What to consider when shopping for the best mattress on Amazon

    linebreak

Choosing a new mattress is a complicated decision, especially if you can't try it out in person before buying. Here are some things to keep in mind as you shop for an Amazon mattress:

✔️ Sleep position: If you're looking to achieve proper spinal alignment, how you sleep can help determine your optimal firmness level.

    • Stomach sleepers should sleep on a firmer mattress.
    • Mattresses for side sleepers are typically softer to avoid putting additional stress on any pressure points, including your shoulders, hips or knees.
    • Back sleepers and combination sleepers fall somewhere in between and should opt for medium firmness.

✔️ Body type: Mattresses for heavier people are often firmer for optimal support, while those with lightweight frames are best suited to a softer mattress. When deciding on the best firmness level for your next mattress, take into account both your weight and sleep position.

✔️ Back pain: A good mattress for back pain will offer pressure relief, typically with an all-foam or hybrid mattress design. Medical experts have told us that mattresses with a medium firmness are often preferred, as they offer a good balance of cushioning and support.

✔️ Temperature: Cooling mattresses can help provide relief to hot sleepers or anyone who suffers from night sweats. Memory foam typically tends to retain heat, so opt for a mattress with coils for increased breathability or additional cooling technology like copper particles, gel or phase change material (PCM) infused in the foam.

✔️ Materials: While memory foam and coils are the most popular mattress materials, there are many different materials used in mattresses, giving you a ton of options to choose from.

    • Memory foam mattresses contour to your body shape so it feels like your pressure points are being cradled.
    • Latex mattresses are similar to memory foam, but latex is made from rubber trees, are sometimes used in organic mattresses and offers a more springy feel.
    • Innerspring mattresses are usually firmer and have more bounce than other materials.
    • Hybrid mattresses use either memory foam or latex with innersprings for a mix of comfort and support.
    • Adjustable mattresses have air chambers that allow you to customize the mattress's firmness level to your preference.

✔️ Certifications: You may see several different emblems when you shop for mattresses. Here's some of the most common certifications you'll encounter and what they mean:

    • CertiPUR-US: This certifies whether the foam used in the mattress has been made without certain harmful chemicals and has been tested for low volatile organic compound emissions (VOCs).
    • OEKO-TEX: The Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex shows that any fabric in the product has been tested to ensure there are no unsafe levels of known harmful chemicals.
    • GOTS: The Global Organic Textile Standard certifies that the entire production process of any product follows strict standards. This is the gold standard for any organic mattress. Just be aware that GOTS only certifies entire products, not single components. This certification is often misused by brands who claim that their mattresses use a few organic components (e.g., an organic cotton outer cover), so you can always check the GOTS public database to be sure.
    • GOLS: The Global Organic Latex Standard is similar to GOTS, but for latex. These two organic certifications are often used together in organic pillows and mattresses.
    • GREENGUARD: GREENGUARD is an indoor air quality certification that indicates that the mattress meets chemical emission standards. The GREENGUARD Gold certification requires products to have even lower VOC emission levels.

What should you be mindful of when shopping for a mattress on Amazon?

    linebreak

When looking for the best mattress on Amazon, it's important to remember two simple red flags:

✔️ Check that it's a reputable seller. The mattress should either be sold via Amazon.com or the brand itself, like with Purple or Tuft & Needle.

✔️ Look for trial periods. Some brands will offer a longer trial period than Amazon's return policy, so you may want to shop directly from the brand's website in that scenario.

Is there a trial period available for mattresses on Amazon?

    linebreak

Amazon's mattress return policy states that you can request a return or refund for any reason within 100 days of receiving your refund, which is on par with many mattress brands' sleep trials.

Just note: This policy only applies to mattresses directly shipped and sold from Amazon. You can check that the mattress you are purchasing was shipped and sold by Amazon by looking under the "add to cart" and "buy now" buttons in the product listing.
