We named Buffy's Cloud Comforter best overall in our latest test of the best comforters due to its innovative construction. It has a down-alternative fill made from plastic bottles that is composed of a web of individual fibers. Our testers confirmed that the comforter felt like sleeping in a cloud and is comfortable for all seasons.

We appreciate the tencel lyocell outer cover that's designed to be lightweight, temperature-regulating and quiet (i.e. it doesn't make a crinkly sound when you shift around). One happy customer writes, "I recently stayed in an Airbnb for the weekend. The cottage had this comforter on the bed, and I fell in love. As soon as I got home, I had to order one for home! It is the most comfortable bedding."

Whether you're shopping for a college dorm or guest bedroom, a more budget-friendly duvet insert can be the way to go. This best-selling comforter is under $30 and has more than 131K Amazon reviews. Plus, you can choose from six neutral colors including white (pictured), light gray, navy or mocha, and we appreciate its lightweight and fluffy feel.

A lower price tag means less luxurious design elements like a down fill or baffle box construction. Still, one five-star writes, "I have purchased three of these. The quality is excellent and the item as described. The item seems much more higher priced than the cost."

A down comforter can not only be more expensive than alternative options on the market, but you may also just prefer a different fill material — especially if you have allergies. Amazon Basics offers an affordable polyester comforter that the site markets as lightweight and great for all-season comfort.

Its soft polyester microfiber cover is designed with durability and warmth in mind. You can machine wash the comforter on warm and tumble dry on low, and the brand says the comforter is meant to resist shrinking and wrinkles, although we have not confirmed this in our Lab.

It is a pricier option at almost $130, but a 4.5-star rating on Amazon across more than 7,300 customer reviews suggests the purchase is worth it for sleepers who prefer a down comforter.

What to look for when shopping for a comforter on Amazon

    double line break

Here are a few factors to keep in mind as you scroll through the many options online:

✔️ Construction: Comforters either have a baffle box construction, which means there are vertical lines in the fabric to help keep the fill in place, or a box stitch construction, which has square sections similar to a quilt. While the latter is less expensive and can be sufficient, box stitching doesn't keep fill in place as well as baffle box.

✔️ Outer fabric: Typically, the best comforters have a 100% cotton outer layer with a thread count of at least 300. You want a high enough count so the fabric is tightly woven to prevent the fill from poking through. If you are looking for more affordable options, a polyester or lyocell outer layer are good choices and usually don't have a down fill so you won't have to look for the thread count.

✔️ Fill material: Many comforters are made from down, or a fluffy cluster from the undercoat of duck and geese. Down is best at providing even distribution but a down alternative like polyester is a great animal-free option. Plus, newer constructions mean polyester comforters are becoming more breathable with better temperature regulation. There are also comforters that have a fill made from recycled plastic if you want a more sustainable pick.

✔️ Price: Amazon's selection of comforters can range in value from around $30 to $80 on the less expensive end, to closer to $175 or more on the higher end. Consider your budget as well as what elements of a comforter's design matter most to you and your comfort.

What is a good quality comforter made of?

      double line break

A good quality comforter has a cotton outer fabric, down fill material and baffle box construction. But that doesn't mean less expensive Amazon duvet inserts with a polyester or lyocell outer fabric, down alternative fill or box stitch construction are bad quality — they just may not last as long. Ultimately, it comes down to your material preference and budget.

      Should I wash my comforter?

      double line break

While some comforters are dry clean only, all of the comforters featured in this article are machine washable. However, make sure there's enough room for the comforter to move freely in the washer and dryer. You might need to use a large-capacity or commercial-grade machine. For best results, add dryer balls and pause the drying cycle midway to manually fluff the comforter, which helps prevent clumping.

What's the difference between a duvet and a comforter?

      double line break

Technically, comforters are meant to be used on their own, while duvet inserts go inside a duvet cover. Though the terms duvet and comforter are often used interchangeably, all the comforters we recommend on this list can be used either way. Stand-alone comforters skip the need for a duvet cover, while using one allows for easier cleaning and protects the comforter, extending its lifespan.
